    Default Another VX Overheating Issue

    Righto, I have a 2002 VXII S-Pack with 165,000km on the clock.

It started to overheat a few months back, since then have replaced the radiator, the hoses, the radiator cap, and flushed the system out twice. Now it is overheating worse than ever, even when cruising on the freeway in the middle of winter it still runs at 115 degrees. Both fans are working perfectly, and there are no leaks or funny noises coming from the engine. I've removed the thermostat and even driven around the block without it and it still managed to shoot up to 120 degrees. I am very reluctant to drive the car and risk serious damage.

For example, if the car is running at 110 degrees and I put it in neural and rev it to the redline (can't be good for it), the temperature drops very quickly back down to about 90 and the fans turn off.

Similarly, if I'm crusing on the freeway in 4th gear, it begins to overheat as the revs are low, but if I shift it back into third and hold the revs at 2500-3000rpm, the temperature begins to fall and returns to normal.

Does anyone know what these symptoms point to? And anything I can do myself before heading back to the mechanic to fix it... Cheers.

It could be that the fins on the water pump impeller are worn away and causing poor circulation. When you redline it, it increases the circulation and it cools down, Just my theory.

sounds like a corroded water pump to me aswell, easy to fix, i hope you had a decent 50/50 coolant mix if it was runnin 120 degress coz if its water alone it might have caused other damage but lets hope not. New water pump and 50/50 coolant will hopefully solve ur problem good luck.

Did a flush a couple weeks back and had a decent ratio of coolant:water. Gonna leave it to the "experts", so going back to the garage on Wed 30th. Fingers crossed, cheers for your help!

You guys were spot on! Replaced the water pump and is running perfectly now, also a new thermostat as the old one was looking pretty ordinary. Thanks so much for your help!

Good to hear. Make sure you always use a coolant that meets the specifications for the Holden V6 engine and this will help prevent the corrosion in the water pump as well as the rest of the cooling system.
