Hey everyone !
I have a 1998 Holden Berlina V6 VT and the engine mounts on it have gone. The car has done around 173,000ks and when i had it up off the ground i saw that it had a few problemsThe sump is currently resting on the crossmember and im pritty sure its making the ride a lot bumpier and rougher.
The question I want to know is how hard is it to do a DIY with changing the engine mounts and is around $50 each mount sound right ??
Any advice would be apreciated

I paid $400 for mine i think, dropped the car 7am grabbed it 4pm. What is involved i'm not 100%, but i know A/C can be removed for easier access.

Undo the bolts to cross member, slip in a suitable piece of 6mm steel plate, (this steel plate will lift the motor off the cross member) then tighten mount bolts. Simple and CHEAP!
Did mine about 50K ago, still no problems.
hit up ebay for mounts.
holden wanted to charge me $160ea
brains auto got me 1 for $80
i got the second one from ebay for $40 lol
ive got the second one sitting on my bench so if someone writes up a how to id like to see it as well.lol
aparently passenger side is alot harder than drive side.
the reason holden charge so much is they are meant to be an oiled filled mount which makes them alot smoother and better than the rubber ones

WTF this doesnt solve your problem. When your engine mounts go they sit on a pin that runs though the centre of the mount. this is what helps cause the vibration. why would you even bother sliding a peice of metal in the gap it still lets the engine connect to the cross member and create a vibration. and your mounts are still stuffed. :/
And Tbh i cant stand doing them on a hoist at work so i wouldnt bother trying for a diy job
MY 1998 VT Berlina
ya dont need a block n tackle, just use a jack and put a little bit of timber accross the sump and lift it 10mm or so to take the pressure off. drivers sides pretty easy, but other sides a pain, have to unbolt the aircon from the block and push it aside. (with out letting it hang on the aircon hoses) n do 1 side at a time
and $50's about right too
like previously mentioned rhs is straightforward. lhs a/c compressor needs to unbolted and shifted forward and the engine mount bracket needs to be removed from the engine to remove the mount. lining this bracket and mount up is easier done by loosely bolting the bracket to the engine first then manouvering the engnie to locate the mount into the crossmember. leave the lhs loosely bolted up to make the rhs easier to bolt up.
if you dont have a jack and an assortment of spanners and sockets then leave it to a mechanic.
Hey stevievs, didn't you read my post properly, I said that what i did worked for me, AND still is. The pins weren't touching and still arn't, only the sump was touching the cross member and that was MY problem!.....and now that I shimmed the mounts, the problem has gone......simple.
I Paid 280 to have the ones done on the VR.
Paid $70 for the mounts and $210 labour to fit. Bargain i think, and VRs are much harder, took them all day.
What about the Trans mount? is that much effort to replace?
Thanks guys for the advice! Ill ask a couple of mechanics and see if my brother has any idea or changed them before
once again cheers

im literally in the process of replacing the mounts on my VT Exectutive.....so far i have the passenger side mount bolted to the bracket which is loosely bolted to the block and the mount is through the holes with nuts on loose..the drivers side is becoming a pain!!!! i cant seem to get the engine high enough to slide the mount in and into the holes???
any tips on gettin the mounts to line up? drivers side...?
I think the drivers side, you place the mount in the kframe and spin the nuts on enough to hold it, then lower the engine down until the holes in the engine block line up with the mount and put the bolts in.
Do a search for "VT engine mounts", you will find its all been covered in detail before.
i just replaced both mounts in my vt what you need is a rattle gun to make things easyer a jack socket set and spanner set (1) put the front of the car up on ramps or car stands (2) undo the bottom two bolts of both mounts then put a peice of wood on ajack and jack up the sump as far as you can if you remove the engine cover from the top of the motor first you can lift it higher (3) remove the fan belt and air con compressor from the passenger side (4) i started on the passenger side but its up to u undo the three bolts that hold the mount bracket to the block once you have to mount out replace the mount to the bracket and put back onto the car (5) drivers side i had a bit of trouble with this side you have to undo the few bolts that hold the mount bracket onto the block i found it hard cause i could only turn the bolts a little at a time so it took forever once out again replace the new mount to the bracket and place back onto the car (6) ok now you have the new mounts in place when you lower the engine down i lined the drivers side up and got the mount studs in a little and put the bottom nuts on a few turns just so they didnt pop back out (7) now what i did was with a jimmybar or some kinda poll i had to hit the studs over to make them go in the holes if you get them to line up do up the blots place the air con compressor back in place dont forget you fan belt and that should be it give your self a few hour to do it and it is easyer to do with a mate hope this helps
SV6Z i just wrote a step by step quide to maybe help any one if you have any probs with the studs not lining up i got the drivers side to sit in just a bit first and put the bottom 2 nuts on a few turns to make sure they didnt come out again then i got bar a tapped the passenger stud over till they popped in i got a mate to work the jack raising and lowering the motor as i needed dont be scared to give the studs a good had hit over but at the same time try not to damage the tread on the studs hope it helps let me no how you go CV6Z and DannyVT
