Just replaced the front rotors on my VT.
Have an annoying "knocking" sound coming from the passenger side
Had a Wheel alignment, and noise is still there.
What could this be, probably something simple and common ?
Thanks
Is the knocking during braking or driving? Maybe the calliper bolts are not tight enough.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
Knocking usualy is the top strut tower bearing and rubber is stuffed.
Worn brake caliper slides can also knock if worn to a flat spot but im doubting it would be that.
knocking is only under brakes .
It has only started since I have installed the new rotors
The caliper bolts are torqued up to 75nm ..
Im scratching my head to what it can be.
had no such noise before replacing rotors so its something Ive done
:Reason for rotor change was undersized rotors and a brake shudder.
Brakes work fine and im happy with their stopping power, Just the annoying knocking sound that I know isnt right.
Maybe:
anti-rattle shim not fitted properly
pad slides not not fitted properly
the little springs on the pads not sitting inside the caliper body
Something more obscure that I have seen is a disc machined too coarsely winding the pads out on the spiral groove against the pad springs. Unlikely with new discs though.
did you do the wheel nuts up correctly. the rotor may be cocked slightly
Problem Fixed 27th June 2010
Thanks for all the ideas/suggestions on what it could be.
I narrowed it down to pad movement as it was only happening under brakes
Pulled it all apart and saw the inside pad had a fair bit of free-play side to side
took the side locating clips out and one of the flanges was bent. So i straightened it out and slid it back into place to fit snug.
put it all back together, Road Tested and is all good.
special thanks to accentstencil for the reply to my PM's
