ok so the other nite i was driving to the bottle-o and my voltage started droppin when idleing at the lights...a little tap of accelerator and the volts would momentarily go back to 14 and then drop agian to about 12.8...eventually it just stopped charging all together.
put a spare regulator in with no luck.
bought a secondhand alternator. car charges at 14 when accelerating (2000rpm) but the battery light is on and stays on but when not accelerating the volts will drop to below 13. the 3 yr old battery has now sh%t itself so new battery is now in still with the same problem.
the wiring from the regulator is good. and i cleaned the terminals...
any help? im really considering lighting it on fire!
Have you seen the condition of the carbon brushes in the alternator? they might already be wearing out
There is a fusible link in both the white wire(b terminal) and red wire(+b terminal) from the alternator. The white wire has a brown fusible link and the red wire has a white fusible link. They are in the fuse box near the battery and look like big square fuses. Pull them out and check to see if the pins are corroded and dirty. Some fusible links have a bolt through the pin on the bottom which has to be undone so you can take them out.
When the alternator goes faulty its not always the regulator there are other parts of the alternator that can cause bad charge like the rectifier, slippering.
How is your cabe from the battery to the alternator? The thick one. Make sure the connection are clean and tight. It even might need replacing.
i took the secondhand alternator back to the wreckers as i;ve replaced the battery and i have 10mm cable for my power and earth cables all with no resistance, and it still wont sit a 14v at idle. im gonna buy a brand new alternator as i need one any way and if there is still a problem then ill send out invitations for a one car pyro show!
these fuseable links? where are they exactly? in the main engine fuse/relay box?
WOOHOO new alternator fixed everything! go's to show you can never trust second hand electronics!
