I apologize if I didnt get the right description for the fiber mat that is attached underneath the hood of the VX. It is attached by clips and easy to remove. I'm guessing its an insulator (?). By removing this mat, would it damage the paint on the top of the hood area? The hood is just inches off the engine and in some spots of this fiber mat, it has come off or is just coming apart.
I'd like to clean the underside of the hood since its been raining like the days of Noah...
yeah man if it is takin off it will ruin the paint on the bonnet!! I was told by a very gd spray painter with over 20yr experience
I think the fiber mat keeps the hood 'cooler' by insulating against the heat radiated by the engine. Ok then, I would remove it till I can find a replacement. But it sure looks nasty though
You can run cars without the insulator, a lot of older cars don't have any and the paint is still good. And new paint is pretty darn hardwearing. I believe it is more for the sound deadening properties, you can hear the engine pretty easy without one.
I did remove mine about 6 months ago and everything is good on the hood, the temperature reaches 52 degrees celsius in here!
As said, a lot of older cars and even a few new ones don't have a bonnet sound mat. Your paint will be fine

Ok, I live in the tropics and I dont want the paint to start fading due to engine bay heat. Next year's project will be respraying the entire VX with a fresh coat of Mica Black
alot of the answers are right, yes there are some new cars that dont have them but in saying that most of them have engines further away from the bonnet than a vt so less heat or a more cooling efficent so dont require one. the purpose of them is as a soundproofing as well as a heat sheild. yes you can remove them & you may never have any dramas but,why would they be put there in the first place if it wasnt necessary?
