Cluster turns off whilst car is running. Help

I have a vx s series ii. This has been happening for the past 2 weeks. While I'm driving the all the gauges on the cluster turn off but the abs light turns on, at the same time this happens the lights become brighter and the engine revs higher.
This lasts for about 5 to 30 seconds and happens Very frequently. I've checked the plugs behind the cluster and everything seems to be connected.
What could it be? Can anyone help please?

It could be your alternator starting to die. Hook a multimeter up to your battery and check that it doesnt go above 14 volts. It might be just your brushes worn out in your alternator so they arent contacting properly which will upset your voltage regulator.

blown alternator reg dash turns off to prevent damage to it. check alternator isnt outputting more than about 14v if it is chance the reg on the back of it

Hey thanks for the reply guys.. I took the car to a mechanic and he hooked it up to a scanner.. There was no faults and it was reading 14.2 volts. I went to the wreckers and got a second hand alternator and it still does the same thing. What else could it be?
