could be one of the sensors, maybe get it hooked up to a diagnostic machine and they should be able to source the issue, maybe try a diff mechanic to

change mechanics dude. he sounds like one of those ones that just see dollar signs over a customers head. firstly,a new thermostat can be faulty. it is known to happen which is why all thermostats should be tested before installation. secondly,if your radiator & waterpump was stuffed, did he just tell you that out of the blue or what? the system should have been pressure tested to confirm any leakage,a 2 minute job at the most & you would know wether it was stuffed or not. at the moment you best bets to get a tech 2 on it from holden service dept or some auto elec have devices that will do similar things,& have a diagnostic scan through the system. this will tell whats wrong & whats not wrong. chances are unless you car has actually overheated & the warning on you dash display came up engine hot or whatever, you just got a temp sender or sensor unit at fault.

I'd say you have air in the system and when the pocket of air hits the sensor - bingo.

Are the hoses real tight when the needle is at it's hottest? Is the car really getting hot or is it just the sensor for the gauge in hot air????

Sorry i have to ask whats the theory behind this. Not holding it's seal?

To the OP. When the needle jumps all the way to the top is there coolant over flowing or steaming. If not it could just be a faulty water temp sensor. It's like a $20 part if that.

I think that is the theory. Under pressure the cap lets a little coolant out every time it hits running temp - dropping the level of coolant and then getting air pockets. Temp then goes crazy real quick.

My 88 wagon is drinking coolant with no sign of it dropping on the driveway (most common way to find a coolant leak) The car still has good compression and so the head gaskets should be OK. Car runs OK. On closer inspection I noticed the Calais insulation on the bonnet was rubbing on the radiator cap - which may be letting the coolant out that way??? There is no mess under the bonnet tho - no coolant oily smear. It's a puzzle. This loss of coolant tho leads to dash setting off temp warning chimes when the coolant gets low.

I think I will change the cap just to see if the loss stops.

fluids reach their boiling points at a higher temp when under pressure.

My VN was doing the same thing a few years ago, and after replacing just about everything under the bonnet that we thought it was, it ended up being my head was stuffed. So i had it bored out and had sleeves put in, and not only did it stop the over heating, but it improved the power a bit too LOL.

What State are you in? I can recommend a great mechanic if you are in WA......
