    Default effects of no spoiler?

    Hey guys,

Just got some questions about removal of a spoiler on a VT-S pack.

    1) Does the spoiler really for anything for downforce on the VT?
    2) Will removal of a spoiler make the car feel any different?
    3) Does the s-pack bodykit look good without the spoiler?
    4) Does anyone have pics of VT-S Packs spoilerless, searched the forums and cant find any.
    5) Is it possible to get some sort of metal looking object to fill the holes on the bonnet?
EDIT: 6) The spoiler weighs alot, so would i get (be it very minimal) speed gain, due to lose of weight?
thanks for your help in advance

    took it off

    1) no
    2) no
    3) i think it would but thats just me
    4) i havent seen any pics
    5) you can get plug things to fill the holes in the boot lid from the spoiler but if youre set on making it look like it was never there you can get the holes filled and the boot sprayed again.

And that would be, a proper racing wing with proper adjustments. Stock holden wings are purely for looks (how someone thought they looked good is beyond me, bootlips ftw)

    Hey man,

I recon it looks way cleaner without the spoiler, i have a series 1 vt s pac and traded my boot for a standard vx boot at the wreckers.

The main deference besides no garnish and spoiler is there is no key hole to manually open your boot.

Ill take a pic before work tomorrow and post it up if you want.

    Cheers,
    Ben

Sure the factory or aftermarket factory-look spoilers provide down-force. The first time I opened my brothers boot after he got a Clubbie kit, I found out that he would need new boot struts that handle the extra weight, but to find that out my head felt plenty of down-force.

Hey mate so when you traded it was it a clean swap or did you still have to foot some extra coin?

haha yeah the dirty bastard made me hand over 60 or 70 bucks, but it was an easy solution to that of replacing the garnish and spoiler holes.

Ive noticed when i press the boot button on my remote the boot will usually lift open without me having to lift it. its good when you have your hands full and dont want to fumble around.

    cheers,
    Ben

Stock Holden wings on a VT/VX I don't think do much however the stock ones on a VY/VZ actually produce some downforce at highway speeds, they do however increase drag slightly which increases fuel consumption. There are articles on this on the web.

As said I doubt they will have any noticeable effect besides increased drag. I mean there's a reason why the W427 didn't use a massive wing like the stupid ones on the SS etc right?

took it off yesterday arvo. Only took me 2mins tops (because i was being careful). personally i think it looks better and will look even nicer when i get my 18 inch monaro rims on it in a few weeks (y). Wouldnt want to replace garnish because i prefer the VT than the VX garnish now.

Only issue is the holes, atm just duct taped under the boot so nothing leeks through, obviously looks dodgey. going to go to autobarn to find some 'grommets' and get some paint to spray them with to match the car colour.

Could be a long shot here, but is there any place that sells thigns that screw into the holes (from the underside of the boot) that have the same metal as the car so it looks neat?
Would go and buy a VT berlina boot, but dont knwo where to find one, plus i like the fact that if i want i can put the spoiler back on. lol

Just go to your local wreckers I am sure you could pick one up in the same colour. Problem solved then.

The VT VX was purely a design for looks, nothing else. As such it has terrible aerodynamics. The rear of the car shouldn't be rounded as it creates more drag. The spoiler helps to interrupt the air flow and reduce drag.

If you wanted to do an experiment, leave it on and note your fuel economy over several tanks on a highway. Then remove it and do the same trip several times and note the economy.

I'd love to know that exact question too!!! Surely some smart entrepreneur out there has already thought of this?

i took my spoiler off a couple of months ago (ive got a VT S1 s pack) to fix the brake light in it, and one thing i noticed out of it all was that the boot pretty much opens itself whenever you remotely open it because it has the stronger struts to hold the spoiler which isnt there anymore.

personally i prefer spoilers on vt/vx, i dont like that fat backside they have without one on it... and when i start getting into some money im trading my s pack one off for a vt ss spoiler

    cheers mate

The VY/VZ sharper boot edge reduces drag a lot, these cars are about 5% more fuel efficient than a VT/VX.

Wrong! here's the web link to the story I mentioned, go and have a read. Browser Warning

Here's a part of it quoted.

"But looking at rear lift you can see that both spoiler types are effective. The 'S' spoiler drops rear lift by 86 per cent while the 'SS' spoiler actually turns a rear lift situation into one developing positive downforce. But pushing down on the back will have a see-saw effect on the front of the car, and it can be seen that with either rear spoiler fitted the front lift increases - although to be fair, it still remains very low indeed".

yeah i know mate, like if i was good at DIY, all they would need is to cut out a piece of metal or whatever that is exqual size to the holes, superglue a screw or attach the screw head to that plate, adn then paint it and screw it into the car... surely someone has done this?

Looks wayyy better without the spoiler

I have a series 2 vt spak and picked up a vx exec boot lid (same colour) was a wicked score for $43 lol. Removed the spoiler and will never go back. Looks cleaner, meaner and lower, As for its actual intended use, on a family sedan commodore = its useless so dont worry about it.
