Hey Guys,
my car has an unusual rattling noise when idling that is pretty in sync with the shaking of the engine.
my mechanic told me that the two things that the engine sits on have worn down heaps and that i should get new ones. I stupidly forget what they're called...engine mounts...or something?
He said it's like thick rubber or something.
If this is making sense, do you think that would be causing the rattling noise. It gets pretty loud when i just start the engine and is loud inside the car.
Please let me know,
cheers!

Sagged engine mounts are very common. The sump hits the front crossmember when the mounts get bad.
ahhhh ok.
should i defiantly get new ones?

Ok so i got a video/sound clip of it.
I had the camera behind the front wheel near the suspension in order to get closest to the noise. You can hear it make a rattling noise.

Really hope this helps!

if its a v6 the genuine engine mounts are liquid filled to dampen the vibration, over time these crack/split and the fliud leaks out and the rubber mounts compress and drop down. near the bottom of the mount there is a metal rod that will stop the engine lifting when the mount s##ts it self and that comes in contact with the x-member and cause a rattle and vibration thru the car, and as tree cutter said the sump can also hit the x-member. there are two type of aftermarket mounts that are avalible for the v6 being solid rubber and liquid filled imo i would recomend the liquid filled ones because of helping dampening vibration.
glenn.
Thanks a lot for the help Glenn.
Sounds like I really should get it fixed. I will take my car in next week and get it fixed.
Also, if you know anything about drive chains, I have made a topic titled 'how to quiet down drive chain' or something similar. I have a video so you can hear the noise I am talking about.
Just search for my name to find it - if you know anything about drive chains.
Thanks a lot again mate
Cheers,
Joe
