diagnostic codes - vtss gen3 auto trans

mechanic i had out clearing my diag codes told me the auto codes wouldnt come up until i had fixed the two error codes to do with the engine. Is this true or is he having me on? i dont know the name of the machine he had but he said it was 20k to buy. orig told me to read the codes would be 69......158 later i got the codes

I would assume you could view all the codes, but perhaps clearing them he would be correct, its possible he has the tech 2 unit (this is what holden uses and quite exspensive).
