hay im just wondering if it is bad to run the car with out one at all or what the effects of not having one is? my v6 ecotec hasn't had one for about a month now thats all
cheers scott
Everything else being equal, ie normal maintenance, your motor will last longer with one than without one. Ask any cab driver. I'm not going into the whys and what fors but they do last longer with the thermostat installed.
This is the exzat same question i asked a couple months ago......
People gave me some realy helpful advice......
What i ended up doing is i installed a low opening thermosat..82 degress....10 degrees cooler than stock....works great........Also when i was runing without thermosat...my car did overheat out of the blue.....just driving for months running normal tem ...than wham tem goes sky hign
simple answer is if the factory decided it didnt need one they wouldnt have put one in there. they are there for a purpose not decoration. sometimes, yes they can be a pain in the bum but thats usually only because they are stuffed or on their way to being stuffed. if you put a new one in make sure you test it first as it has been known for new ones to be stuffed from the factory![]()

Instead of going a cooler thermostat, go a stock temp hi flow thermostat. That way it doesnt run out of sync with the fan and sensors.
When running without a thermostat, the car never reaches required optimum running temperature for better fuel economy (car thinks its still warming up and cold therefore pumps more fuel in), and most importantly engine oil. If the engine oil doesn't heat up enough, it never gets the chance to burn out the condensation from the last time the engine was switched off, so theres more water left in the oil. Also on a petrol engine car the unburnt fuel that runs down into the engine never burns out oxidising the oil.
G'day all,
test running in the new to me 1998 VT Calais during 600 kilometers of country work over the weekend , I noticed that the water temp gauge didnt move away from the cold setting, untill the outside air temp rose.above 18 deg C As the day got hotter the gauge ventured up as far as a third. Hmm No thermastat fitted I reconed.
Back at the shed the thermastat housing was removed to show a therastat with the guts knocked out. New thermastat, 180 D. New O ring, and a proper bleed of the cooling system. we were ready to see what happens.
Set the mode and up key pressed in, start the engine and middle of the dash gauge showed the water temp to be 27 , easy driving moved the temp to the first mark and showed 180 on the display, The gauge and temp them settled down to 183 for city work. Happy with that.
Appricate the forum, the amount of info on here is of great assistance to anyone that loves a Commodore.
