    Default Help buying a car

    Hey guys and girls,

I'm looking to get a wagon and was looking for some advice. I've got about 6-7K to spend and it seems for that price all i can get is a vt or vx. I'd prefer the vx but most of the vx's are executives and/or have high kms. There seems to be some clean vt acclaims with decent kms for around the same price. So what do you think i should go for? What would you go for?

    - VT Acclaim with decent kms
    - VX Executive with decent kms
    - VX Acclaim with slighty high kms

Obviously i want a clean car with power options and as low kms as possible but i know with my budget something has to give. Power windows would be nice (which is why i'd prefer an acclaim) but at the end of the day i'd rather a car with little to no mechanical problems. Should i stay away from the high kms ones (ones that are approaching or over the big 200) or am i getting worried about nothing? How long do vt/vx's generally last before major probs start to appear? Anything in particular i should be looking out for or staying away from? Cheers. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Depending on service history and overall condition a higher K motor should be OK but the running gear would be starting to wear. Mines done 320K kays, haven't touched the motor but just replaced struts, ball joints, caster bushes etc. My mechnic tells me the Ecotec is good for 500K kays + if looked after
The acclaim is like a safety pack with additions like traction control and front side airbags. If these safety items are not a priority for you go the exec.
Usually the better option is to get the youngest car with the least kays as each update EG VT-VX has minor improvements. For 7K you might sneak into a VY exec?

Well all I can give you is my own experience, I'm driving a VT with 426K on the clock, and the engines still going. It's a VT Series 1 from 98 so it's also had 12 years on rural and city roads.

The big things that have been done are radiator and fuel pump about 2 years ago. This year a few problems have cropped up from age and the kilometers on it. Suspension, mounts and bearings of said, so we have had to rebuild the front suspenion in the last year and bit. But as far as major problems, nothing so far, it's still on original engine, gearbox and diff and nothing has gone pearshaped yet. So I wouldn't worry about the big 200 too much, seems VT's have no problem getting past 300 and more. The only thing I'd watch for is who the previous owners are, and check the service history. From what I have heard so long as you keep up the 10,000 click service cycles, they seem to keep going.

Just be aware that any VT/VX you get, is nearing the age where it's going to cost a bit of money and anything over 300,000km. Factor in possible rebuilds.

And in my humble opinion, keep E10 out of it. 95 or 98 RON fuels do have their benefits in the VT's.

personally i would be looking at an acclaim, irrelevant of year, its safer, got more airbags....traction control is good but my right foot does the same thing! just get something with more airbags, its safer better for you if something unfortunate happens, low k's are better but as previous people have pointed out the ecotec will go almost forever if looked after.

If your buying a vt Try to get series 2

Also lower km doesn't always mean its a better car........
Might of been thrashed ect... Try to look for one with service history
