Any tips or tricks, or important things to do or look for when servicing automatic transmissions. I know you have to remove the pan and then the filter, replace the filter and gasket, and fill with dexron III, is there anything else?
I intend to recondition my own 4-speed auto transmission out of a 2002 Vx Holden Commodore Lumina, and do intend on purchasing respective workshop manuals, but once again, zany tips, tricks or important things to note? THX GUYS![]()
just a word of advice, your work area has to be clean enough to eat off. Even cleaner depending on your eating habits. One speck of grit, dust or any foreign material in the valve body and you will be pulling the box back out of the car because it don't work properly or at all. Not fun...My mate had a work area you could perform surgery on. Stainless steel bench, wash tank and his shop floor was laquered so it was easier to get rid of dust. He used to mop the floor every day. I should add that he owned his own transmission place and did all his work in house. There are a number of special tools needed as well plus circlip pliers, internal and external plus test equipment for the electronic control module ans servos.
this is true there are many tools needed
take this advice im a mechanic i sent my box away it went to the trans branch of where i work but still had to send it across town
im a 4th yr apprentice and i changed oil and filter on my auto 50,000kms ago but thats all i did, just made sure everything was clean before reassembling.
word of afvice though, make sure the filter is pressed up properly or it will fall down into the bottom of the pan and will cause all sorts of dramas. learnt that the hardway![]()
