    Default Fitting new seats/airbag VT 97

    Hi first post so go easy on me.
    I just got a good old 97 VT wagon which needs some fiddly things fixed. The first off the rank is the seats. I have managed to pick up a passanger side set from the wreckers off a Dec 97 wagon same trim. However it has an airbag fitted to the seat, so I got the airbag unit as well for an extra $70. I watched the fella take out the unit and got all the bolts too. I didnt get the actual dash part and hoping my dash part is generic with exception of the badge. If not I have to get back to him to take the whole dash off to get the "box" it sort of sat in, Im hoping this part is standard.
    I have read some posts about fitting the airbag and thier are problems in the legality side of it as I have read. What options do I have?
    Get the units tested, if so who does that type of work?
    Can I fit myself or get a mechanic to fit, It doesnt look pretty when he took it out as I have to remove a lot of parts that was already dismantled.
    I am also hoping the wiring harness allows for this fitting. There was a little sensor on the airbag unit that should plug into the harness. Also is there any other things I actually need, will the computer handle it? programming? is there a way to fit these, eg what happens if power gets to the unit?

    air bag sensors are specific to how many airbags are in the car IF you only have the front 2 then you are better off not getting the one in the seat ,

    I bought a passenger side seat which had the sensor fitted so I grabed the airbag too.
    The car is fitted with a drivers side airbag only.
    I spoke to an auto electrician today and I need to go back to the car and grab the module in the centre console unless it can take more than one?

    I noticed the passenger seat in the car already has the sensor on the seat, are they compatible? or should I just swap them over.
    My passenger side seat now has a lumber support.
    I was hoping the seat matched but it doesnt, off to ebay it goes.

    I need to know what parts I need as I got most of it but I am hoping the dash section is common. Or do I need to take out the whole dash to fit?

    I started taking the seat out and saw the passenger side had the plug connected, on further examination it has the sensor on the seat, it is connected to the wiring but I cant see any air bag under the dash. I was just hoping the wiring was there and it was.
    Is there any easy way of fitting these? do I need a new module in the centre console?
    Are sensors compatible?

    there are 2 plugs, 1 black, 1 yellow on the loom. the yellow attaches to the air bag sensor, the black must be for power seats as it is connecyed on the drivers side which has power seat up and down. they are located on the floor under the trim. same on the car it came off and the black wasnt connected to anything passenger seat didnt have power added but did have lumber which I fitted to existing seat. have to have closer look under drivers seat.

    Maybe the sensor unit I have on the current seat is only a seat belt warning sensor. I see on ebay they have a sensor unit, where are these located? or is the sensor unit on the seat the same? they look the same with a green thing on them.

    Looking at some old pictures of my seat, i can't see the wires you have mentioned. Here is a picture, please excuse the writing. does this look familiar ?. My car has 4 airbags.. just reading the book about side airbags. it says the side airbag will only inflate on the side the car is struck. is there a sensor around the door b pillar maybe ?.

    Can someone also point to a link to decipher the VIN, I found this elsewhere does this apply to VT?
    Check the ISOVIN.. 6G1***4**********
    Then number after the body style code represents the restraint code.
    1 = seatbelt
    2 = driver & passenger aribags
    3 = driver airbags
    4 = driver, passenger and side airbags
    Is there any relevance to wiring?
    I am seeing some electric/maybe insurance issues, maybe get a quote from a smash repairer?
    First I need to see if I have all the parts while the car is there. I need to get a new clock wheel as my horn dont work auto electrician says $200 may be the wreck has one and use it?

    Correct me if i'm wrong but if your seats have 2 plugs under the drivers seat
    One is for the seat belt pretensiona other is for the elc seat movement
    If you have a 3rd plug its for the air bag

    I think not 100% sure but makes sense
    The wire going under the seat goes to near the seat belt
    That is the seat belt pretensiona

    I can't see this a problem with insurance ??? would it??

    You should be OK without connecting them because there is no visual difference between a non airbagged seat and one with an airbag, so who would know.
    I think the side impact sensor is in the pillar next to the seat.

    appologies, Its not putting airbags in the seats, its putting the airbag on the dash. The plugs shown are the seatbelt pretensioners. I have found out I need a few more parts, ythe BCM, maybe harness, the dash flap and the shell its sits in the dash. the wrecker wants another $250 for the parts an a auto electrician will fit for $500-$600, I dont think its worth the effort.

    Just a tip, not sure if its in the thread already, ill post it anyway. If your swapping your seats, make sure the battery is disconnected for at least 1 minute (i'd wait 5 just to be safe) so that the computer doesn't register an air bag fault when you remove the seat belt pretensioner air bag cable from the seat. This is a sensor, but it's just there so it knows if someone is in the seat, it also completes a circuit for the air bags, so if your driving without your seat belt on, the air bag won't go off. the point of this is say if you have no one in your passenger seat, you wouldn't want the passenger side air bags to go off if theres no one sitting there.

    There is a lot involved in getting extra air bags to work, really not worth it, but in saying that, if you have passengers often (for example, kids) it might be worth having the extra safety. I've swapped my dash pad over in the past, in doing this i could see the passenger air bag and everything involved, in fact i think i have a picture of it somewhere. It looked like it would be a lot of work to get that put in, but if you have little ones might be worth having the extra safety.

    Sorry for reopening a thread here, but i have a VY crewman S pack and i just put non airbag seats in (used to have airbagged seats) and i didnt disconnect the battery before hand unfortunately. so now i have an SRS light on my dash and a warning sign every time i start the car.
    Anyway of fixing this??
