did the search, no results that helped. can anybody give me a reasonable description of how to change my VT wagon tailshaft center bearing? I am going to rebuild my tailshaft by installing new universal joints and the center bearing AND CV JOINT!? I can do the uni's but have not pulled a center bearing out before.
edit:- I just found the info in a Holden service manual on cd. What a pain in the ass. Their procedure to r/r the tailshaft says the exhaust has to be removed and the gearbox has to be lowered to get clearance so the tailshaft can be removed. Who the hell designed this thing??? Is that really the best they can do? Just to rub salt in the wound, the n/a VT V6 tailshaft is nearly identical to the VB Commodore and I have worked on a few of those with none of this drama.

very late reply but i have never had to remove the exhaust for doing this in my vt wagon
I gave up hope of a reply on this thread 6 months ago and had completely forgotten it. I did nothing to the tailshaft and have been to Queensland twice since, no problems at all. Still sounds like a 747s engines spooling up, especially when I am slowing down. Not loud but there. I'm used to it now.
that noise might be the diff?
I replaced the front uni on my vt sedan a few weeks ago because it was chewed out like all hell. To drop the tailshaft down I found I had to remove the mufflers and let the exhaust hang down a bit. Not the gearbox though...
