I have a problem with my VT series II V6 commodore. Over the last few years intermittently the engine has shut down, whilst driving, approx 15min after cold start. I have to switch the ignition off, wait a few moments and then it will restart (it will not restart unless ignition is switched off first otherwise it just cranks but not fires). Lately it has been getting a lot worse, it stalls now most trips and I will have to crank it several times before it will restart. Also seems to happen more often when I am towing a trailer.
Does not make any difference whether I am cruising, accelerating, de-celerating or at idle.
When it stops the engine management light comes on immediately and it stops as if someone has turned the key off, of course once the engine has stopped rotating the oil, amp light etc come on and also the power steering and power brakes fail (all normal for a stalled engine except the engine management light coming on before the rest).
I have tried a replacement coil pack (complete) it cut out less often but still cut out.
Also tried a replacement computer and body control module without success.
I have been told it could be crank angle sensor but would prefer not to change this unless I am sure this could be the solution to the problem.
I have not yet tested using a diagnostic machine as I have been told it will only tell me there is a fault, not what or where fault is located? Would this be true?
I would be very appreciative if someone who has come across this before and has a solution for me please let me know.
Thank you for you time in advance

Change your DFI module.
Mine used to do the same thing. Only when hot on a trip after everything was nice and warm. It was like the key had been turned off. sometimes it would start again straight away, other times had to wait 1/4 hour.
Spoke to an auto electrician. Put a new DFI module in 12 months ago and hasn't happened since.

Hi Billy Bob,
Thanks very much for your suggestion.
I should have mentioned that when I changed the coil packs I also changed the DFI as well.
I was hoping that was the problem too, but unfortunately it didn't fix the problem.
I bought a replacement crank angle sensor so I will try that next.
Very much appreciate your input.
