Changing the fuel pump?

Been told by the mech that my fuel pump is about rooted and i need to replace it, i thought you had to drop the tank to get to it but he reckons you can get to the fuel pump through the boot?? is this right? and how hard is it to change yourself. its a 99 VT v6

He's thinking about falcon. you can get to the falcon fuel pump through the boot floor, except the wagon. It is under the passenger side behind the rear wheel
