Default VT Fuel Consumption & Gauge Question

    Hey all,

    VT SII with Supercharged Engine.
I get anywhere between 19.7L / 100km hard city driving (mostly start stop, lots of acceleration and deceleration) Highway the lowest I can get it with aircon off is 10.1L/100km

Is this normal ? Mind you it is due for a service.

    Also the most important question.

Something is F'd with my tank.
This morning, digital read out said 12.5 L left in the tank & it was showing quarter tank, cool, so i went to fill up.
@ 39.7L the pump clicked. meaning i technically only had 52.2L in the tank, but isn't it a 75L tank?
    So where is the rest?
I've tried to trickle fill it right to the brim, the gauge shows about 5-6mm down from full. I've never had it go fully up. So i'm very worried as to where the rest of the fuel is? thats 22L missing!

Is it possible that someone has had to change the tank and fitted a smaller 60L in it's place?
    Could that even work ?

    Thank you for your help.

Fill the car up as much as possible and reset the trip counter, that should give you a good idea as to the amount of KM you're getting on a full tank. Then, check the average range of the Supercharged 3.8 and see if it's remotely correct.

If it's close to the standard range, i'd be checking the fuel sending unit for faults.

    Thank you for the replies.

I've tried to fill it up as much as I can reset the trip computer.
I got 500km to a tank which is the normal amount I guess. I've been getting that amount in driving as well, which makes this even more strange.
So i guess it could be the fuel sender? Which i guess is a very expensive repair.

    What should I do ?

500km from a tank is perfectly normal, as is anywhere between 10-20L/100km depending on driving style.

As far as the distance to empty-litres remaining, VT fuel gauges are by far the most inaccurate form of measurement on the Earth. The best thing you can do is fill the tank to the brim, drive it as far as you feel safe (till the gauge reaches 1/4 or something) fill it back up and work out how much you used and how far it got you to get an idea of how your car is on fuel.

Is this a new car of yours? If so the low down is this: Holden fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate, mine is very bad as is the one on my Dad's new VE (though it is marginally better), VT's especially can be iffy. If you are getting 500KM the fuel is getting from the tank to the engine and it is a 75L tank so I doubt it's the fuel pump. I've noticed in mine if I fill it up from half it won't always go all the way to full, even though it is.

So yes, as I said, these gauges are a bit funky, so long as you are getting the distance from the fuel you put in, I wouldn't worry.

Agreed. that electronic thing telling you how much distance until empty is useless...
eg. Drove from Hervey Bay to Brisbane (3hour drive on highway) and it gave me another 60km of distance in my tank as i drove...did not decrease at all the whole trip, just kept increasing haha

I have a VX SS and when i fill the tank DTE reads around 860km, however i only seem to be getting between 6 and 700km to the tank.

Thanks again for the replies they have helped a fair bit.

MikeCuzzy i've had a few vt's and vx's & a VZ and I've only ever had a shit gauge on my VZ and this car.
I do get fuel range between 10-20L / 100km which i thought is normal as well.
The digital measurement does show 75L when I have filled up fully, i'm just wondering if this gauge will get any worse and what I can do to correct it?

But yea I am getting the distance from the fuel for sure.

LOL JSTCOZ i know what you mean hahaha, thats happened to me before on my VZ, it said I had 0KM of fuel left turns out I still had 12L.

    @mainpath

Lucky you I seriously feel like I am figuring out how much fuel I have by using the Force.

I wouldn't worry too much unless it was inconsistent giving readings, i.e. you let it go to 1/4 and it had 30L, fill it up then the next time it had 20 at a 1/4, then the next time 6L or something that indicates the sender unit is a bit funky. But yeah, as I said, so long as the fuel is getting to your engine it boils down to whether you want to fork the coin out for an accurate fuel gauge.

I drive the same route all the time so I know I've got about 650km till the tank is dry and go off distance covered rather than distance to empty.

my vt l67 seems to use roughly the same.. hwy its good with fuel, but around town it sucks ass, ya have to be real real easy on the throttle to get good fuel consumption around town.. a good service will help it out a bit thou..

as for the digital thing , as said above -its crap...
if you've had ya fuel pump changed the little float thing may have been bent a bit, so it thinks theres more or less in it. i stuffed mine a little when changed pumps, i bent it or it got bent a little in the post, but its got more fuel than it thinks there is which isnt too bad, will never run out..
