Default VT 5.0L vs VT 5.7L?

Just wondering what the diffrence of power is in kw, and which is nicer to drive, probably looking for a manual and are there any problems in the 5.7L since its the first model.

cheers to anyone who can help.

Personally I'd go with the 5.0.
Lots of bottom end torque and sound sweet.

I've heard, that the early 5.7's had issues with going through oil and serious drama's with dodgy pistons.
That said, that was 10years ago, so anything that was a problem should have been sorted under waranty you would hope.

you would think so, but not always the case with problems sorted, thanks for the input, any idea on the diffrences in HP or kW?

    vt 5.o v8 304ci has 179kw
    vt 5.7 v8 346ci has 220kw
i reckon you should go for the 5litre cos to me they sound better and easy to work on
vt 5.o manual clucth would cheaper to replace than the vt 5.7

I own a 5L manual and I love it. Obviously yeah it has 41kw less then the 5.7 so yeah not quite as much power, but as mentioned the low end torque of the 5L as well as the old school V8 sound more then make up for the lack of kw (to me anyway lol). If you look at a 5.7L just check for piston slap, as that was the major problem with them causing oil use etc. Also check the compliance plate. If it has an X stamped on it (in red i think) it means the engine was pulled down and rebuilt under warranty by Holden
Oh and rego is $130 cheaper (in NSW anyway) for a 5L rather then a 5.7L LOL

the early 5.7s had heaps of issues. One was they chewed threw oil and the second im aware of was that they had piston slap. I would go for something with a series 2 ls1 otherwise the 5l option. Parts and mods are probably a bit cheaper for the ls motors though.

you only have to look at resale prices to see how the LS1 commodores go against the 5.0

    my LS1 = $300 nsw rego and 450-500km to a tank...

buying a 5ltr is absolutely pointless cheif....

i spent over 7k converting my vt show car from a v6 to a brand new 5ltr running gear.

it was in the car for 4 months before i pulled it off the road to go LS1.. 5ltr's are slugs and the vt body is pretty heavy.

vt 5ltr = most powerful 5.0 holden produced vt body = heaviest body holden made combined = an absolute slug and a vs 5ltr will mash it.

i drive a vx berlina ls1 with direct injection, cai, pacies and exhaust and its mash's alot of cars on the road, i would never go back to a 5ltr now, EVER!

yes the series 2 vt (first of the genIII) had piston slap problems, but it was sorted out and were fixed under warranty for a majority.

my berlina had piston slap and had the motor replaced under warranty in 2003, no probs since!

to check if a car has had the GEN3 replaced, ring holden with the VIN # and they'll tell you what was done and when under warranty! thats how i found out about mine before i bought it!

5 liters can sound really hot with a good exhaust system without much internal work, but a 5.7 has a shit load more up and go!

go for a 5.7. There is a big power difference and a cammed up ls1 with an exhaust can sound just as good possibly better than a 5.0.

A 5.7 sounds nothing like a 5L regardless of the exhaust. Just as loud, yes. Same old school V8 note? No

Does it have to be a VT?
Frankly I would try to find a VS clubsport with a 355 in it. Better motor.

    i thought bout LS1 but i had a vs 5.0 b4 this n never had a problem with it, so i thought y change a good thing..

^^^ Definatly drive two cars with either motor.
They're both very different to drive. Don't get carried away with numbers.

My vote is 5.7. But I agree drive both, as it really is personal opinion. I have to say even though the 5.7L would be my choice, I don't think I would call a 5.0L vt a slug. My car vt supercharged, is 171kw, vs 179 ( i think ) kw for the 5.0L and I don't regard either as a slug. But price wise if someone said you can get 40kw, for an extra grand, and it is the same to insure, and around the same for rego, well I wouldn't have to be asked twice.

I say get a 5.7L and save up for a supercharger, that will fix any issue you may have with lack of torque.
