guys does the ignition leads wires are meant to hold a lot of heat from the exhaust manifold outlets????
geez i installed yesterday top guns leads and i decided to cover them all with plastic tubes to protect them from the exhaust manifold heat but i was shocked 2day when i discovered that they are all melted
at the bottom where they near the exhaust manifold outlets.
then how come this wire will hold this extreme heat from this area (exhaust manifold outlets)??????
I just (three days ago) got new leads fitted to my VT. The mechanic put the original heat shields back on the new leads. No heat problems at all. On the other issue, the plastic tubes you used would have to be extremely good plastic to be used near heat of around 300c. That sort of heat will melt almost any plastic. Most leads these days are made of silicone rubber which handles heat very well.
What is all melted, the plastic covers you installed or the leads themselves? Would be surprised if the leads melted, but like said above, plastic will melt easily.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
personnally i wouldnt use top gun leads they r not the same quality as they use to be and they r definatly not the same leads as they use on race cars like alot of people think.id go bosch performance leads or ngk.my leads on my vs and the ones on my vt dont have the original heat sheilds and havent had any problems.if the boots on the leads have melted id take em back to where ever u bought them.
Take the melted plastic that you put on off, and don't put anything like that near the exhaust manifolds ever again. The leads are designed to be near extreme heat, I don't know why you thought it would be wise to protect them!!
Engine leads are designed to be used in extremely hot places obviously, manufacturer's of engine leads or anything that goes under your bonnet are aware of this and make items that can withstand heat.

i think hes talking bout the leads that run behind the thermostat housing/manifold area and under the alternator? there should b a larger conduit 2 fit 3 leads that feed through there originally which does with stand the heat, well mine does neways. mayb u needed 2 find the conduit thats got a heat resistance rating? and the type u used was just normal plastic?

thanks mates for replying. am actually talking bout the plastic tubes not the ignition leads at all. i did remove all the plastic tubes from the wires.
and about the top guns they are really really excellent quality in deed. and the reason why i replaced my GM ignition leads with top guns coz the fail man the car was misfiring and they were 1 month old. i did took them back to Holden but they refused to issue me a refund or replace them aswell which really i was very angry at them. i bought the GM leads from Holden as they were on special for 56$ i couldn't believe it they usually are 120 to 145$. but maybe these ones are messed up that's why they were on special. top gun leads from the first mint i installed them really i did feel like the car jumping man alot of hell POWER. and they are numbered as GM leads. they are for 59$ from auto barn REALLY REALLY am happy with them very decent quality.
