yes before u asked i have searched the site as im sure ive read something along the lines of this question before but i just cant find it,
anyway i put a pod in my vt ls1 today and notice when i first started it after i fitted it it was a little hard to start, its all good now it starts fine anyway my questions are
whats this pod guna do to my engine will it hurt it?
will my fuel economy be better or worse?
it definintally feels like it has more power and it sounds dam sexy under full throttle it doesnt have a heat shield ATM but im guna try and make up a heat shield tomoro i also cleaned the maf while i had it out it was filthy
all advice much appreciated

Everyone has there own opinions on the matter. You do get more airflow then a standard panel filter, as there is more surface area for air to travel in, but since its in your hot engine bay, you then loose performance. No it wont do anything bad to your engine. Not sure about fuel gain, run a few full tanks and see how it goes. be sure the pod is fully boxed away from the engine, cops love to defect card for that. Enjoy the new sound lol
what soop said.
get an OTR
and be very careful of the maf plug as the pulley will wear both it and the electronics on the maf away (i bought a car that had a pod filter on it at some stage ) had to replace the maf and the wiring !
Agreed. Pod is a waste of time man. As stated you gain a tiny bit from higher air flow, then loose it straight away because its sucking hot air it. And im pretty sure even with a 'heat shield' the pod is still illegal and defectable, they have to be in a fully enclosed box im pretty sure. Get an OTR.
Pods only suck hot air when they are stationary, Had a k&n pod on my ls1 better than the standed setup but have now upgraded to a otr RAMJET FTW.
Take it easy...But do take it...

OP you have no idea what can of worms you have opened.....
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
Bingo!
I've no idea where people get the idea that pods have more surface area's. Cut the side open on one and roll it out, its so close to as to not matter to the panel filter, and the fact that its a conical shape means that one end is smaller then the other, so when you spread it out its probably less then a panel filter.
OTR are the proven way to go. Then comes the debate of MAFless.
End of the day, any other intake setup, how many KW would you be gaining? 1-2kw? (for non OTR setups.)
I run standard air filters on both of my LS1 and LS2. VT has the two hole monaro mod and that's it. I can't really see getting any better performance out of those setups without going OTR.
I have heard contradicting my above opinion that the K&N Charger setup appear to work okay. I have thought about going this way, just that I am still trying to see how K&N can clean as good as a normal paper filter. My mind tends to think if you can let more air in, that to me thinks more dirt. Yes K&N have oil to trap the dirt, but then that would have to stop air too? Well I suppose air particles are finer then dirt.
Also with my driving and living in country area, I drive in dustier environments, if I was in the city or clean air environment, K&N would probably be okay.

I agree with you on the K&N thing. You would be cleaning it every other week. I live in a rural area as well, and pull the filter out regularly to bash out dust and bugs.
OTR probably wouldn't be any better but I would rather increase flow with increased surface area then increase flow with decreased restriction. Because restriction is what stop jiminy cricket getting suck, push, bang, blown.
Yes that's another reason why I wouldn't use OTR, is because I don't want to have K&N filter, unless you can get standard paper filters for those.
Apparently too though, Lucus I think make cloth filters. No oil needed, you just wash out with water? I am not sure how good they would go.
I would rather loose a couple of KW to ensure to look after my engine.
Yours Kindly,
Jim
I've got an OTR sitting in my shed with a factory standard VW golf filter in it. Well, so I was told in order to replace it. Which is a cloth/steelmesh filter. I would use it without hesitation.
vtssdude OTRs dont have to use K&N filters there are a heap of paper type an foam filters aswell.

ok well its gone a bit off track, im not looking for performance, i purely wanted to put the pod on there because 1. i was hoping to increase fuel economy as on my wh statesman s/c v6 the pod increased my fuel consumption fron 22ltrs/100ks to 18ltrs/100ks and 2. i love the sound it makes sucking in its so sexy, i plan on getting a mafless tune and otr very soon i just have to get the time to do it

Well you can only try mate, thats half the fun of playing with cars, see what works and what does not. Still interesting that the V6 SC is still using 18ltrs per 100kms though? thought a SC would be around 14s, but i dunno about the SC V6s. Only time it will be really sucking in hot air is when your not moving. when your moving should be pretty cool. dont worry a pod wont damage your engine. Just play around and let us know your results mate :-)
I have a pod on mine, I can hardly hear it.
