Default Changed cluster Now have Service error

As the title says I changed my cluster due to the fuel guage and thermostat gauges not working properly and now the newer cluster has Service error.
My first question is can this be fixed with tech 2?
and I had level 2 cluster beforehand what is the diffrence now the new one is level 1?

no I thought my thermostat was broken so I changed it to a 81c and it did not help. when i pulled out the cluster I noticed if I turned it upside down the fuel and thermostat would move freely so thought they were broken. and I was right the new cluster has fixed the fuel and thermostat gauges.

is the level 1 cluster from a VT also? should have the white back housing on it? If so u could try swapping the fuel and temp mech gauges 2 see if they were the problem. VT gauges rnt soldered in place and can b removed like its plug and play, VX is different.

Do the clusters have the same numbers on the top of the lens? The Service error may just be the cluster is not suited to your without being programmed. Also the service error may well be a left over from the previous car and stored in the cluster - so a tech 2 should be able to remove it.

I've been told the white back clusters are the only ones that can be re programmed

I've just purchased 20 VT/VX clusters to play with - what number is on your cluster? We may be able to work out what is wrong with your.

It is in my car atm. and its not a white back model. the cluster I removed is a white back though (level 1)!
I will have to remove the level 2 one which I replaced it with.
Is there a problem with the fact that I put a level 2 in and not a level 1 which was originally in place? All I know is it fixed the calibration problem that existed with my speedo 20km over the correct speed!

I've pulled 15 of the 20 clusters apart and looked at the guts of them. The white back clusters have a different PCB inside them than the black backed ones. The level 1 and level 2 clusters have the same PCB in tham so it must be down to the programming on the cluster to make it level 2 or just the fascia may be different. I even have a level 3 cluster with a single window lcd in it.

Some clusters have removable gauges - others dont.

What is the number on the broken cluster? it will have a 2 letter prefix followed by the 920##### part number.

Hmmm - I'll email the list of details I have for the 20 I have - you can see if you can add info to it. I'm working on understanding what clusters fit what cars. I have photos of all the the stickers on the clusters as a record. It bugs me that no one knows what cluster fits what cars. So the search is on. I'll keep buying the clusters with different stickers on them and rip em apart to get all the numbers off them. Then scan Ebay for people selling clusters that I can identify with a type of car. Should build a better picture for when we get issues like the OP has. So I hope to be able to understand the VT VX clusters in a way that can help others when looking to swap clusters over.

No worries i think most of them r just programmed 2 suit the cars ECU, BCM and PCM but u'll definatly notice the difference between the VT and VX clusters, the clear plastic diffuser's r different and so r the needles, if u strip them 4 parts let either Greg or myself know we can use alot of these parts 2 start making DIY kits 4 the VT/VX's.

I may have access to some more clusters for parts. What parts are usable? dials/needles?
