i had some rooted seals in my steering rack so i had my rack reconditioned. since the rack was reinstalled, my speed sensitive steering only works after i start the engine. as soon as i do say 15km/h, the steering goes into highway mode and never comes back to crawl mode unless i shut the engine off and restart.
ive told the mechanic about it and he has confirmed that im not dreaming but hes bloody busy and im going to wait ages for him to research this problem. if anybody knows what could be causing this problem id love to know about it.
the solenoid on the rack might be faulty or the wires might be damaged. its plugged in near the battery and the wires run down to the rack near where the steering column connects to the rack. check the connection and wiring
calais was with the mechanic all day yesterday. he flushed out all the steering fluid to be sure there wasnt anything blocking the steering pump etc. im sure he would have checked the wiring etc. its no different to how it was so its still a puzzle.
I'd suggest the solenoid and / or wiring to the solenoid is the cause. It will have been damaged when the rack was reconditioned. The solenoid may have some junk in it that inhibits its opening / closing based upon vehicle speed, or one of the wires has simply been damaged. Either way, you'll have to replace it.
The replacement solenoid is around $200 from Holden.
cheers
