    Default Light Control/slider question

    kind of a 'newbie' question.
Today i bought a second hand dash, same colour with the fog light button ready.

I noticed that the button/slider on my current dash in the car slides up, then down.
where as the new dash slides up but straight back to the middle, it doesnt seem to lock into place like the other one.
Should it stay in the middle or lock to the top or bottom?

If its faulty can i remove my other one and place it in this dash part? If so how can i remove it? i dont want to break anything.

    thanks guys

Thanks, yea i saw that post in my searchs. was kind of helpful with his comment on 'as i have come across a few switches that only have up down setting to turn on interior light, but the switch you want is the one that you can hold up or down and it springs back into the center again'
Im thinking mine will still work its just a different way of choosing the setting ie. push up to increase lighting and push down to decrease. after you have selected, it goes to the middle. Ill have to check tomorrow when i chuck it in.
hopefully the wiring is the same so it works with my car.

It was to show the op that the light switch can be pulled apart therefore he should be able to swap over the parts if it is broken.

Inside the switch there is a small ball bearing which puts pressure on the dimmer slider assembly to stop it from moving when you turn the headlights on and off. Chances are you are missing this ball bearing which you should be able to remove from your old switch.

Chances are if you have a fog light switch in the new dash, you have a higher level surround, and a switch, from a Calais or an SS. The sliding tab that returns to the centre is a luxury model feature, and lets the dimmer be set to anything inbetween full brightness and totally dimmed. Holding it down will dim and up will brighten. When released, it keeps the level of brightness you want and returns to the centre.
The lower level switch has only two or three locked positions, and the brightness is hence at 3 preset levels - no in between. Plugging the new switch into the existing socket should work as a variable dimmer in your car.
    Hope this explains it better

It's not faulty - the switch in your pic has a variable dimmer switch.

The high series models (Berlina/Calais/Stato etc) have variable dimming, so this switch goes up or down but returns to the middle at rest.

The low series models (Exec/Acclaim) just have two settings only - high (bright) and low (dim).
