    Default VT Ignition

    Hey guys,

I've done a quick search and found several threads about other problems relating to ignition.
    Just looking for some help.

Over the past couple days (hotter days), when I've put my key in to turn the ignition on.
The key will go in fine, but it's like the ignition barrel jams and wont turn. Usually takes a couple of goes and maybe even the key to be pulled in and out for it to work.

One of the guys at work suggested graphite something or other to spray on the key and then put it in turn it on and then take it out and wipe the key clean.
Don't want to do this without a few other opinions.

Graphite powder is the right thing to use. If problem persists then a new barrel is probably needed. If the graphite powder does not help then don't leave it too long to replace the barrel because eventually you won't be able to turn the key at all and that will make replacing the barrel a lot harder. It's about $50 for a new barrel, not too bad.

Graphite powder is what lubricates locks, it is dry, therefore no dust will stick to it and jam it up more. Use a lead pencil, same thing, rub it up and down the key shaft and put it in the ingnition a few times.

If that doesn't work, then it's time for a new barrel, the brass plates wear and don't line up properly anymore causing the key to jam, also the little tab on the back of the barrel can break off and jam it up also. It will get to a point when it won't turn at all, replace it before it gets there as it is easier to get out while you can still turn the key. The key needs to be in the ON position to get it out, a small pin is inserted into the hole on the siade of the barrel with the key ON, then it will pull straight out. The new barrel will have to be keyed the same, once you get the old one out it is pretty straight forward to do, just copy the old order of the plates, they are all numbered.

Ignition switch or ignition barrel? Either way $350 is very pricey.

this has just happened to mine FFS.
I can start the car because i have used a screw driver to turn the ignition switch at the back with the key in the ignition, but my steering wheel is locked....
Is there anyway of unlocking the steering wheel without turning the key in the barrel, which i cant do?

    Thanks for the assistance guys.
Put some graphite powder onto the key a couple times yesterday and put it in the barrel to loosen everything up.
seems to have worked ok so far.
    see how it goes.

Graphite powder... its all I've used and works fine so far.
poor a bit onto your key, put it in the slot, turn it on to acc and turn off.
repeat a couple times, then clean key before putting back into pocket.

    Done.

Just get it fixed before it gets too bad. the last thing you want is it to happen when somewhere inconvenient.
I went to a wrecker and bought a barrel and key for $50. I kept my key plastic surround and just put the new key it in, all good now.

I just did mine, new barrel from Holden for $60.75 and I put up a series of vids ( not too clear unfortunately ) on Youtube. Look for:

I reckon all these jobs are hard the first time then they get so easy you can do them with your eyes shut. well, sometimes!
