VT Power Steering Erratic

The power steering on my VT commodore is mostly ok but occasionally and at inconvenient times is very heavy i.e. no power assistance at all. Sometimes a few revs above 2K fix the problem. Never seems to be a problem when the car is running on the road just when in a parking situation. Major or minor?

Maybe you drive belt has stretched to the limit making it slip when under load ( when parking). It is probably a long shot but worth checking. There are markings on the tensioner arm which indicate when the belt is no longer serviceable.
