Default How much is it worth?

My dad's old commodore is reaching the age where it's costing a lot to maintain and so forth, and since I am soon starting full time employment, it's a cost they won't bear for much longer.

So I have the choice of getting another car, or buying this off the parents.

The problem is, she's old, done 432,xxx km. The gearbox has sounded better as has the engine, the body needs a bit of work (rear suspension, exhaust).
All said, I have been driving this car for a year and know it like the back if my hand. It's obviously not going to fetch much, my parents will sell it to me- though they haven't decided on a figure.

So the 2 questions a) what do you think it worth and b) how much am I realistically looking at to rebuild it- I know it's an vague and hard to answer question, but I am looking for advice. I would like to keep this car.

Yeah mate, 98 Vt Exec. It hasn't been flogged by myself or Dad, I mean it's still around, and Dad has had it since it was a year old, ALL original engine/gearbox. Most significant thing replaced was the radiator. It's the one in my display pic.

Well we are a family of 3 kids, I am the eldest, if they give me a car they feel as though they must do the same for my siblings when the time comes. So if they sell it to me it is, in their opinion, fair.

problem is you see a lot of VTs getting stripped for spares with less km than that

it's worth $250 at best and that's contingent on it being registered

my mate picked up a VT Berlina with just over 400,000 on the clock for $900, that many k's on the clock and only being a executive simply buying some seat covers is worth more then the whole car itself. sorry

you can go out and buy a vt with a significantlly less amount of k's on it for a few grand mate.
rebuilding is not worth it in my opinion.
flog it off to someone or sell it for parts, that will be your best bet.

Well yes I am starting to think you guys maybe be right. The only reason I was considering it is because I've been driving it for a year and it's been a good car, thought I fear it may be at the end of the road as it were.

I've been looking online, and found a VT with 220,000km on it, the guy had dropped the price by 700 dollars because people kept being turned off by the kilometers. So yeah I am thinking that buying another one might be the better option- given most VT's seem to have half the k's.

I bought mine with 140,000 on the clock for $1700, my bros father inlaw has a VT with only 70,000km on the clock, I really wanted to buy that off him but he wont be selling it till next year some time when he gets a VE.

There's probably nothing wrong with the motor. Just fit all brand new ignition gear (plugs, leads, coils), fuel gear (pump, filter and injectors) and an air filter. I've been in a VX with 670,000km on it and the motor was still fine.

As for the box, a rebuild kit for a couple hundred dollars and it would probably be pretty decent. Rear suspension you can pick up reasonably cheap buy an entire cradle with a diff and everything from a VX Series 2 (with the adjustable toe) with low kilometers probably cost you about $400 max.

Exhaust is easy, 30 minutes to replace. I'd also spend some money and put brand new shocks and springs all around and get new bushings in the front suspension.

the problem i see , is ALOT of different makes and models of all different milage ranges are getting stripped for spares. 250 my fat ass! try buying a set of decent tail lights and garnish for 250 from a wreckers.
to the op if the car has been on alot of highway km which sounds about right for 400 odd ks its not too bad. rather have a high mileage car than a low milage car thats been sitting in traffic longer than its actually traveled ie ricers

Reading this and everyone saying its not worth anything or its really low.. $1000 at least I think its worth.

I like white VT's they look clean and easy colour to keep that way.

If the motor is fine, fix the exhaust and suspension and drive it. You wont get much for cheaper unless you go back to VN's or older.

With a little work and elbow grease that car should last you years, even if you have to put another motor and box in it down the track its just brining new life to it and will last you longer.

500 or so bucks, drive it till rego runs out then scrap> go looking for a half decent car.... OR if it is in half ok condition and you think its worth fixing (ie no huge problems) keep it. As someone said before the devil you know...

Depends on the market, in SA it would fetch 1500? regardless because althought they're common, they're extremely popular second hand and series 1 execs with 300k go for 3 grand.

I'd buy it for $250 any day of the week :P

lol, more bits have fallen off, it's needed some repairs (door handle for example) which I have taken care of. Parent's don't care much anymore, they will give it too me for next to nothing, as it's more trouble than they care for and brother doesn't want anything to do with it- so yay for me
