is your fuel pump priming before start sounds a lot like when they dont prime and you have to get the oil pressure up so the oil pressure switch fuel pump backup turns on
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong

yeah mate its priming its brand new, so is the fuel filter, the battery, reco'd engine has only been in for about 2 months has new rings, lifters & bearings. everytime i take it to a mech they tell me its something different, one did a fuel pressure test and said the fuel pressure dropped off to nothing as soon as the car was turned off, he reckoned that was my fuel pump but i put a new one in and it still doesn't start any better. I was thinking the fuel pressure regulator might have been why the fuel pressure dropped off so quick?

yeah probably mine sits at 40psi for ages when i turn it off.easy to replace its held in with 1 allen key i think.easiest way would be to remove the fuel rail to replace it but should be able to reach it in place

just picked up a new fuel pressure regulator from Holden today for $90. I have the same symptoms as you and have done the same things to try and fix it, so fingers crossed that this will fix it.
Easiest to partially remove the fuel rail (don't have to disconnect fuel lines), might as well do the inlet manifold gasket while you are at it, which is what i'm doing.
It is held in by a circlip, so circlip pliers will be very handy.

it didn't fix mine If your car also coughs and splutters when you boot it (accelerate hard), then it could be your problem. It's back to the drawing board for me.
As for Vt's having to replace the whole rail?? I thought all of them are removable?
