Default Aircon problem again, replaced the compressor by holden dealer and fail again ,HELP!!

    Hi guys,

Two weeks ago, I had my vt series 1 aircon compressor replaced by holden dealer(Metro Holden). and the compressor(brand new and after market ) cost me about 500 dollars, plus 300 dollars labor, and o ring ,regas etc. Then aircon works just fine, though not freezing air but cold air.

Today, when I turned the A/C on, no cold air at all.

I checked my compressor by swithching on and off A/C, I found out when A/C is on, the front part of the compressor is rotating and when A/C is off , the front part of the compressor stop rotating.

But when A/C is on, the front part of the compressor is not rotating all the time, and it stopped after rotating say 5 seconds.

Please help, Why aircon not working , bad compressor? What should I do when I see holden dearler?

When he told me the compressor should be replaced, and he said the aftermarket one cost 500 bucks, and warranty only for the compressor , if it fails, I still need to pay the labor.

Oh, by the way, when turn A/C on, should the front part of the compressor start rotating or it suppose to just rotate few times and stop?

    cheers

Id take it back to holden and get them to diagnose whether its a faulty compressor ,or if its something they have done while installing it.If it is the compressor thats faulty, get the holden dealer to write a quick note explaining that the compressor was faulty when they installed it,just in case you need to send it through to whoever you bought the compressor from. They should replace it for you under warranty...

Yes it should. You might have a leak and that is why it is not working. The compressor clutch won't engage if it is low on refrigerant.

Sounds like your compressor is working properly. The front part should spin when you first start it but should stop after a while as the system pressure reaches a high enough point. There is a pressure switch on your reciever dryer that switches the compressor clutch on or off. If the compressor ran constantly then the air con core would ice up until it split open. One of the pipes going into the compressor should get really cold and start to ice up close to the compressor if it is working properly. You could have a problem with your heater controls or one of the flaps under the dash so the cold air is not getting to the vents.

today the air con works just fine, and I am not sure what happened. But I will see them tomorrow to diagonise what the problem was any way.

yes, the compressor is ok, I touch both hose coming from the compressor and one of them was very hot,and the other one was extremly cold.

    thanks

why is a holden dealer uses aftermarket compressor??? and it sounded very dodgy when they only cover the part but not the labour??? i like to see any trader getting away with that

when i replaced my compressor by a holden dealer here in melbourne it cost me about $800 as well but i wasn't told it was aftermarket. are they even allowed to use aftermarket part as a dealer?

When i asked them for prices, quotes, they told me a compressor cost about 800dollars.I ask them if they have cheaper one.later they told me they have found a aftermarket compressor 500dollars so 300 dollars cheaper.

but if I wanted the aftermarket ,within the warranty period, if compressor failed,I would still need to pay the labor to get a new one fitted.

Finally I decided to have the aftermarket compressor ,coz it's cheaper.

And air con is fine now,not sure what happened but it failed one day,and back to normal .not sure if I still need to see them to check.

ok, just dug up my old receipt for your sake

my was done in sep 2007, ie 3 yrs ago, in melbourne by holden dealer and the invoice details:

    code: 08gmzzzzcheck

description: check operation of a/c system. checked and confirmed checked a/c compressor clutch operation all ok. checked found a/c system low on gas carried out a/c service. found a/c compressor not pumping gas. supplied and fitted new a/c compressor regassed rechecked all ok.

    amount: 177.00

    code: gm92102247

    description: compressor & cl

    unit: 1

    amount 535.50

    code: gm52455752

    description: seal ring a/c

    unit: 2

    amount: 9.70

    code: pol

    description: r134a air con gas

    amount: 50.00
    ----------------------------------------------------
    total: 772.20
    gst: 77.22
    ----------------------------------------------------
    total invoice: 849.40

looks like a genuine compressor to me. and the labour was only $177 which include troubleshooting and fitting !!!

btw i can't verify the air con anymore as i've already sold the car middle of the year......
