Just blew the head on my 98 berlina wagon. Looking pretty bad at this stage... Im thinking a new motor with lower kms is the way to go... found some good ones on ebay I think
Can anyone recommend a good reliable cheap mechanic who can do the change over?
Car is currently located in bentleigh
I wouldn't get a 2nd hand motor cos they're all worn out after 220-250 000 k's. Plus yours was a second hand motor before it blew up too aye! It cost less to get some 2nd hand vy heads (they are the same as vt heads and vx heads). They vy heads will have a lot less k's on them too. About $450 to get 2nd hand heads, vrs kit and everything else you need for the fix. Find someone who will do it for a days food and a couple of cartonsI would but I'm in Tasmania. P.s Almost EVERY commodore with these engines have cracks in the heads. Fine cracks between the valves are ok but not huge ones obviously

Considering you can get a whole motor for less than $600, it's not worth doing just heads. Plus add on the gaskets and everything else, you're just setting yourself up for a bigger bill.
Just get a motor, and get that put in. Will be alot less hassle in the long run. As for mechanics...open the phone book. And pick one close to where the car is located. Less of a towie bill to get it there then.

just so you have at least one name, i just had my vt engine and tranny changed over by kumback wreckers. i am really happy with their work. it cost $1450 supply and fit. they are in governer road, moorabbin (maybee cheltenham?). that not too far from bentleigh really. it took them 2 days to do.
I'm in the same boat. My VT Berlina is loosing power and fluid. I had the same thought of going to a VY motor. If all you have to do is change the sump then that's an easy swap. I'm used to doing Euro swaps so the old VT should be a breeze. Spend your money on some tools and a small crane and have a go yourself.
... you learn heaps!
