First, I am not deaf, second I had several other people in the car. Now the problem. I was driving quietly along suburban streets when my water pump siezed. By the time I managed to get to the side of the road, the serpentine belt was shredded and all over the engine bay. No previous noise tho a wrecker said I must have ignored it. I have been driving for better than 50 years and I am paranoid about any noise in my car. Even rough road surface (course bitumen gravel) makes me think I have a shot wheel bearing.
Any ideas why this happened? Apart from the crappy after market pump with the pressed steel vanes instead of cast iron ones. Anyone with the same experience?
Yep,had the same done to me mate. When pump was replaced the old one had Made in China on it and was inferior to the eye from 2ft away.
HOLDEN COMMODORE V6 VN - VY WATER PUMP MADE IN USA (eBay item 110595259450 end time 04-Jan-11 23:30:40 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats
This is what you need as a replacement, check if local auto stores have this brand for you if not then go EBAY.

thanks for the replies. I just happened to break down outside a Commodore wreckers and just up the road (30 metres) from a new spare parts place so I got a second hand pump which looked like it had been on a car for 5 minutes. Bought a new serpentine belt from the spare parts guy. Fitted it all up on the side of the road, people walking by looking on in amazement. Carry tools with me wherever I go, saved me a lot of money over the years
