alot of things mate as you know vx is pushing now 10 years but anyway from my experience here are main things to look for..

    1- engine mounts + trannys
    2- radius bushes
3- coolant in oil or oil in coolant
4- look for any tranny or engine oil or coolant leaks underneath
5- sway bar links ball joints
    and maybe more....
anyway if u gonna buy from dealer make sure that there is warranty written in the contract.
test drive the car and take your time and after that let an authorized licensed auto shop give you an inspection report.
    goodluck..

Don't buy anything without a service history. or assume everything was not done or done poorly with the cheapest parts available.
Personal opinion only try to steer clear of anything owned by a teenager, maintenance is rare, car is usually thrashed and mods are poorly done.
There are some realy good teenagers out there but there are a lot who treat their cars poorly

The good teenagers keep there cars!

But I agree with everyone else, service history is a must, make sure it's got rego left on it- even a month. It could be a world or problems to register it if it's been out for a while.

You service the Ecotec motor every 10,000km and it will go for ages. They had nutted out most of the fault's that plagued the old VT's, I have most of them :P. Dealer might be a good option, but it will be a far more expensive one, trust them only so much. The "clean" engine may look clean because of degreaser, but has been flogged everyday of it's life. And don't buy a car without a mechanic or someone well versed in cars having a good look at it. Good luck though, the VX's were/are a good car.

Only buy the series 2, they had the adjustable rear suspension. IEspecially if you intend to lower the ride height or put wider rims/tyres as wear will be more pronounced.

Look out for leaking steering racks - very common issue with vx's. Both my SS and my old Exec have had replacement racks fitted.

Rocker cover gaskets are common as are inlet manifold gaskets.

Service history means a fair bit on these cars. A poorly maintained ecotech will cause trouble. One thats been serviced every 10,000 will be good for half a million kays

more or less what he says..... I'd go for a series II. They have a moderately better rear end set up with the extra link. Never heard of a ball joint failing on anything that new but it's possible. Oil Leaks and Auto failing are the biggest risks ARAIK..

The biggest tell tale I look for is a well kept interior - if it's looked after, generally the rest of the car will be looked after.

Yep, if it looks like a dog inside it will have been treated like a dog and you should steer well clear of those types of cars.

    Series 2 for the win.

I reckon that sounds pretty resonable.

Just remember that dealer warranties exclude many, many items. Like a car I bought years ago said in the warranty "specifically excludes drive train" What the? Warranties are a load of crap.

EDIT: Sorry, that should have been "specifically excludes drive shafts"
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
