Hey all,
Here's the story with my handbrake.
1 - Have to pull it up fairly high for it to engage
2 - the button in the end pops out with the spring
3 - When driving along, if handbrake is engaged, there is a loud thud and it pulls from the rear right only. Therefore leading me to think some adjustment need to be made so it's even on both sides.
I know we aren't supposed to drive along pulling up handbrakes, but I'm sure it's also known as the 'emergency brake', meaning it can be used to help slow down in an emergency, and I honestly think mine does F all at the moment.
So I'd like to know if anyone can help me mainly with fixing point 3 and 1.
The 2nd one is neither here nor there, as I'm sure a bit of glue or a new handbrake etc will fix this.
I've got a couple of weeks off soon and I'd like to possibly be able fix this if possible.
Thankyou for any information that can help!
Tighten it just behind the handbrake lever, and adjust the shoes so that it is even on both sides. There is an adjustment cog (?) on the back brakes where you can stick a screwdriver or similar in an adjust them.

I'm pretty sure the thud is normal because it happened in my VT and my Caprice.

Cool, thanks.
Tightening it on the back of the lever should be easy enough to sort.
With regards to adjusting the shoes, how do you check that it's even on both sides ?
I've never played with that side of things before that's all, not 100% sure what I'd be looking for.
id start by taking the caliper and rotor off. should be pretty obvious if the shoes need replacing.
get a can of brake cleaner and spray the components down.
turn the star wheel on the adjuster with a flathead screwdriver, put the rotor on and off until the shoes drag slightly. if you cant get the rotor on back the adjuster off a little.
when both sides are adjusted that should take out some of the travel your handbrake lever.
I take it the shoes for the handbrake are different to brake pads ?

okay cool, shouldn't be too hard to locate then
Thanks!
Use a set of vernier calipers to check the adjustment of the banksia. They should be sitting at 189.6mm.
Or alternatly you can leave the rotor on, rotate the assembly until the inspection hole is inline with the starwheel on the bottom of the assembly andadjust it through the rotor.Adjust it until the assembly touches the rotor, then back it off two turns.

I MAY be in need of a new cable, unless further adjustment can be done UNDER the car?
The thread seems to be all the way out it can go, tried to tighten it up further and it was going solid.

The adjustment should really be done at the handbrake shoes.

That's what I'm thinking.
Will I be able to adjust it enough to pull that slack you can see on the brake lever, or is the cable potentially borked?
Didn't have the tools to check it properly today, hence only looked at the lever, which was already done up to what you see in the pic.
Undo the nut on the lever till its almost off, then adjust the rear brake shoes as explained above, then retighten the nut at the lever.
Silver Certified.
Cheers Ricey!
