Hi there, as the title suggests what will be needed to make a decent 4L60E gearbox?
So far I have a Trans-go stage 2 shift kit, and sonnax 2nd and 4th gear billet servo piston's.
If anyone has a list of what they have done, that would be great.
Cheers for the help.

the best rebuilders take the case and the pump body and fill it with all new upgraded parts it is the best way
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
Money. LOL.
New clutch packs, bands, sun shell is particularly bad so replace with Beast, etc, etc.

Cheers fellas.
I will look into what can be done and the prices involved to do so.
I appreciate the help.

+1 to what has been said above. Have the transmission rebuilt by someone who is known for doing a good job. Plenty of heavy duty parts that can be fitted to these to make them a good solid box. Have them fit the shift kit and servo's while they do the rebuild.

Is there any other parts that can be recommended?
Or is all that is said above needed to do the job??

What was just mentioned is a fairly extensive build.
Count on it to cost you a few thousand dollars.
If you want to source the parts yourself and maybe save some money check out some of the US ebay sellers. CT Powertrain is a pretty good one. You can get rebuild kits from $100 for a basic kit or up to $400 for a serious heavy duty kit. That covers all your bushings, seals, steels, clutches, band, etc. Have a bit of a browse around their store at the others parts available they have most of the updated heavy duty parts pretty well marked and you should be able to get a good idea of whats available. They also sell the few speciality tools you'll need to do a rebuild if you're keen on doing it yourself.
If you're getting a kit with a 'wide' band then you'll probably want to pick up a new reverse input drum as well. Most drums will have wear from the oem band which will cause a slight dip in the surface of the drum which will stop the new wide band from making proper contact with the drum. A 'beast' sun shell is also highly recommended.
If you're interested I have a copy of GM's technician guide for the 4l60e which I can send to you in pdf form. Makes for some good reading and has some guide diagrams on the internals. PM me if you want it.

a question peoples.... i can understand if you want an awesome drag box for smashing quarters but wouldn't it be less to do a manual conversion???
unless there's some real good reason you wanna keep it auto
also i heard that it's possible to get 6 spd autos that drop fit into the 4L60 space (not the 6L60)
$2500
Beast Carbon Fibre Band Set
Beast Furnace brazed Torque converter
Transgo Stage 2 Shift kit
Corvette Alloy servo Piston
Transgo Performance seal and Gasket Set
GMH4L80E Pump set (adds 20% line pressure)
I have had all this done and am very pleased with the results.

I would love for it to be a drag car, but I don't live near a drag strip, not even close!
But the main reason I don't want a manual is because, I'm on my auto P's I still have 1 more year on them + the box needs to be rebuilt dropping 4th, slipping. So I purchased another second hand one and want to make it perform better than it does at the moment.
Also a manual conversion + building a decent box, would be way more than an upgraded auto, wouldn't it?

don't worry manual gearboxes crap themselfs also,i,ve seen doggy 6 speeds jumping out of gears and making plenty of noise, and not to mention drive train shuddering!!nothing wrong with a slick positive changing auto.
Ive seen a hell of a lot of people do a manual conversion, then most of them have problems with the gearbox or clutch etc.Standard manual commodore boxes dont like handling power or torque,it kills them in no time, especially if you like driving hard and have a decent engine in front of it..This is why quality manual boxes like the hollinger boxes, cost so much to buy, they will easily handle big power all day long..

Thanks rb26dett. Will give craigs a call today.
I have had my gearbox work to the max. Stage 3 full race shift kit, Billet servo, Z pack 3/4 clutch, Beast drum housing, bigger Kevlar band, upgraded clutching gear piston (i think thats what they call it). They were alloy in the VR 4L60E box and metal in the VS and later models.
I had mine build by Ron Hill Automatics.
