hey just wondering whether or not it is worth the money but there is a 1997 VT berlina i can get my hands on, about 150 000km on clock new brake rotors, new pads, new fuel tank, new waterpump it 17" vt SS rims and newish rubber, no rego only needs a new fuel pump. paint is pealing in places tho, interiour is in fairly good condition. guy said 3000 as is worth it? just wondering what pricing would be looking at for a new fuel pump and get the paint fixed up?
Thanks
Brett
you say paint is peeling, where ????
he's a tip for everyone if the clearcoat is failing on the bonnet then it probably had a major engine overheating it's the number 1 cause of paint failure on the bonnet
little bit on drivers door, spoiler, right hand side wheel guard. altho looks to only be the clear coating
as i said and we all seen bonnets with peeling paint thats what causes it
otherwise looks like a bargain if the K's are legit
currant owners are family friends so there legit people, they have owned the car for 5 years and only not using it because havn't had time to replace fuel pump and where looking at new car anyway so they just desided to wait to fix the berlina
for 3K i'd day yes
i paid 5.5k for my VX with 190K 1 owner with log books thinking it might need some cash spent on it, but its been serviced religiously
best car i've ever owned
before this one i've bought a car new and it was totally stuffed at 100K and then caught fire![]()
oh lovely caugh on fire
I would save my money. How do you know it even starts after putting in the fuel pump?
What if the motor is seized?
The paint is peeling the tank has been changed for what ever reason.
Save your money and get a car with a fuel pump lol
i have already got a 2001 series 2 s-pack was just thinking of having it as a fix up and sell, reason for tank is because the owner and myhself we live in rural australia and she reversed into a bit of cement near a channel, the engine is fine cos the car will start then stall cos it gets starved of fuel
just thought i would revive the forum and get some more people's thoughts, still thinking about getting the car, as it is still available, if i do get it what are some things to do as it hasn't been started in about 2.5 years, should i just make sure it has oil and coolant then give it a reali good service after she is all up and running. i am thinking of offering $1000 cash and if he declines offer $1500 cash.
Probably dump the oil before startup, put a cheapish oil in there while your getting it running right, then dump it again when she's all sweet and put some good stuff in
yep change the oil and filter, flush the cooling system and add new coolant, plugs and leads, probably need new tyres if it hasn't moved for 2.5 years and get brakes and wheel bearings checked and take it easy for the first 1000km's or so.
for $1500 you'd do well even if it needs a bit of work, $2500-$3500 for a car with Km's like that and in good running order and is tidy.
$3000? Tell him hes dreaming, I can pick up a VT for around that with rego. I reckon $1500 would be pushing it. Put it this way I picked up a 2002 Series 2 VX S Pac, Manual mind you with only 115, 000 on the clock for $6500, body and kit is in perfect condition and the interior is like it was rolled out of the showroom. So you tell me is it worth it? Lol
that $3000 was nearly 12 months ago and i was enquiring on behalf of a friend.
Hi mate,
personally I wouldn't do it, not for an early series 1 VT with alarm bells ringing, well, maybe for 1K. Unless you can get them to put a fuel pump in and get the thing running. Remember you would have to add on top of the pump price for a blue slip, CTP, rego, insurance, so there's another wad. Also, you are only going on their word that it only needs a fuel pump. If the cars been sitting that long, who knows what else has deteriorated. They put a new fuel tank in, but what about the fuel lines/injectors/rails? Have they got bad fuel in them? who knows. Too many questions unless you're prepared to do the work.
My intension of buying this car is to fix it up, do u think 1k or even 1.5k is reasonable?
yes it is very reasonable for $1000-$1500 ring a wreckers and see what they would pay for it and tell the seller then add a bit on top to sweeten it, don't go over $1500. Its going to need money spent on it maybe $2000 as a worse case is what it could cost to get back on the road (will be less if you can do allot of the work yourself though) plus the cost of the car, tell the seller that too.
if he says no just keep looking for something else theres running cars people want to get rid of
I might be goin to look at the car this weekend, what is the bet way to check if the aircon still work's cos the car will only run for about 10 seconds, should I just turn the ignition on turn the aircon on then start it and If the fans and the compressor engage does that mean the system is fine?
$1000-$1500 is ok as long as the work needed isn't huge. If your just looking for run around go for it.
Just check everything water oil fuel will be stale if its got any? a/c might not work rotors rusted she be as tight as a fish's rear will need some tlc. I bought my car smashed and honestly wouldn't know how long it sat around for. My old VP sat for 3/4 of a year before i bought it, needed injectors fuel filter throttle body o2 sensors radiator brake pads trans service exhaust parts were rusted in total just over $1000 but it ran like a dream with much of that work done.

We have a licensed and running series 2 VT V6 sedan here, average condition, 230ks for $2500.
$1000 max. Not going and no registration means you will need a flat tow or permit to drive a vehicle like that with no registration, and who know what it might need for RWC? Plus anything else. Sorry to be doom and gloom.
just got off the phone to the owner, goin to look at it on tuesday arvo, he said there is fuel in it and i can try to start it, it will run but as soon as u go near the throttle or if it idles to long it just stalls, could it just be clogged inline fuel filer or clogged filter on the petrol pump itself?
he said he would be very lucky to get 1000, (he is a realistic type of guy) so i am thinking 700 cash he might let it go for.
