Default Need a new ignition barrel - plz help

    heyy

for the past few days ive been having problems with my car key and ignition barrel... i insert the key but it wont turn right away i have to try it a few times first.

today it locked up completley... the key would not turn at all... so i called the RAC out and they taught me a little trick which works well enough for now. But the guy says he would reccomend getting a new barrel (i think thats what he said)

so i was just wondering if anyone had a rough price on this. I wont be installing it myself so i need the quote to include labour. Also, where would i take the car to get this done? I live in perth by the way.

    thanks heaps in advance

the parts from repco or holden( the reason i wouldnt take it to holden is that thay have a fixed price that incudes many many of $$$ in labour)

the parts not going to be the big price its the labour to uninstall and re install thats going to at least tripple the cost of the job from $80 in to the hundreds...so ringing around would be a good start if you not into doing it( or giving it a go) and seeing who is cheapest( or try and get some free quoates from the local mech and take the best price on the day>>>>>>cheeeers

It doesn't come with a new key, you need to take the barrel to a locksmith to have it coded to your old key. In fact a lot of locksmiths sell the barrels and fit them for you a lot cheaper than Holden. So call a few locksmiths.

If any mechanic charges more than an hours labour, they are ripping you off. I am not a mechanic but have been working on my cars and friends and family cars for about 45 years. No I am not a backyarder, just trying to help people out, saving them large dollars. I can fit a barrel (on a good day) in less than 3/4 of an hour. Here are some on ebay all about $50ish to $60 including postage

Holden Commodore VT VX VU VY VZ Ignition Barrel & Keys (eBay item 180602446143 end time 17-Feb-11 01:27:13 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

Holden Commodore VT VX VU VY VZ Ignition Barrel & Keys (eBay item 380309628920 end time 19-Feb-11 15:28:13 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

Just by the way, I did do part of a diesel mechanic course with Truck Sales and Service many years ago.

pretty sure there is a couple of auto bahn's in WA.
One in Cannington near JB Hifi/Pet Magic/Red Dot etc (Albany Hwy/Nicholson Road area).
Also one in Myaree I think just off leach Hwy for memory.
Looks like they do servicing too according to their website.. didn't know that. I thought they were just parts.

THIS autobarn doesn't exist in wa :P http://www.autobarn.com.au/storelocator

It's a bit tricky if you haven't done it before but if you buy a Gregory's manual for less than it will cost to have it fitted, it will guide you through the procedure and you will have a manual for future repairs.

    Bugger.
My commy carked it today so off it went to the auto electrician as there was no spark to the starter.

Thought i may as well get the barrel changed as well as its playin up again and was quoted $200 fitted.

Much better to ring around for prices before the thing dies and you run out of options.

    cheers

i got one done about 12months ago, that was a mobile locksmith and he came to my house and fitted it for $130. mine was completely jammed and to be honest with the amount of dicking around he had to do, there is no way that id attempt to even try to do it myself. i do have a short fuse but but defo ring around as i had quotes from $130- $480... wtf?
