Hey guys
I have a 98 VT Exec, and everytime i start it up and well, turn, the car starts to make a whining noise
I think it may be the power steering belt or the fact that my power steering fluids are low-ish
How can i get it fixed and how urgent is it ?
Cheers GUYS!![]()
The "lowish" fluids you talk about are probably the problem.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
Has it been lowered? A mate of mine lowered his VS ute but kept the stock struts and it 'whines' a little when turning.
On the VS models ,if the steering makes a groaning, moaning type sound when the steering wheel is turned, the cause of this noise is the bush where the steering column goes through the firewall. To fix it,all you need to do is spray WD-40 up into this area where the bush is,from the engine bay side. After being told my steering rack and pump were stuffed and causing this noise,I read about this fix on here, and thought Id give it a try,it fixed it instantly, and 2 years later after spraying it with WD,the noise still hasnt come back.Im not sure if the VT has this same problem with this bush or not.Ive fixed quite a few VS's now with this noisy steering problem using WD.
VT's are known for their dodgy seals in the power steering pump. You can buy new seals for like $12, but you'll need one of those bearing press machines to do it yourself (apparently). I wouldn't say it's *very* urgent, it'll just start leaking more and more. I just top mine up every few weeks until I can afford a new one. Been doing that for 4 months now...
Mine does the "whining" too, the fluids are fine. A few people on this site reckon it's the pump as I don't have power steering unless I rev the engine. I really need to get that fixed, though I debate it- if I keep trying to park it I'm gonna get ripped :P
