You need to be a bit more specific about the vehicle you are referring to. Your ride says VR V8, your post says VT without indicating whether it's a V6 or V8. If it's a V6 then Chaps has the probable solution. If it's a V8 then the problem could be the ignition module overheating or the Hall Effect sensor in the distributor.

Could be crank angle sensor but this problem can also indicate a blown head gasket or cracked head.

    Hi there,

To answer your question, it is a 98 VT wagon (V6).
The car only seems to cut out when the weather outside gets to 30 degrees + and has so far done it twice, once on a relative short drive, the second time was after a 3.5 hour drive back from the coast.
As for the crank angel sensor, can I ask how long they are meant to last, as we had it replaced approx 2.5 years ago.
Additionally the car has just recently started to 'over rev' (not sure what the technical term would be), whereby when on driving (mainly on freeways) the car will rev to 2-3 rpm without dropping back, the only way to try and correct it, is by shutting down the car for a period of time...but even doing that does not always correct the issues.

Anyway thanks heaps to everyone for your advise.
