Hey guys,
Just wondering if there's an 'easy' way to remove the distributor cap. Trying to do it with the leads still connected so I can match them to the new cap, however its proving a little difficult to do this seeing the plenum is a little in the way.
I've got plastic covers over some of the leads, so I guess I could cut those off and match the cables up and label it/mark it on the dizzy cap, then just pull everything off and then I'd assume I could get it out from here?
Doing the rotor as well today so not sure if there's a particular method to doing this also.
Any tips/tricks people know would be great, but in the mean time, I'll go hack the plastic covers off and do it that way :P
The easiest way is to remove the engine completely... The location of the Dizzy on the 5.0ltr is nothing short of a pain in the arse; I'd recommend climbing up onto the intake manifold, chuck some blankets down to protect your knees and go for it.

Yeah cant be bothered taking the engine out :P
I managed to get the cap off (which is all I want at this stage).
Should be able to manage to pull the rotor out as well I think, but I dont have time to do it just now.
the dizzy itself is staying on there at this point in time.
though if I need to change it in future, I think I know now to take it to some other poor bastard to do it :P
Easiest way is to pull the intake manifold off.
You can see why im an advocate of TP manifolds now. Even if its not a huge performance gain on a stocker, its sooooooo much easier.
No idea what a TP manifold is sorry :P
Thought about pulling the manifold off to gain easy access, however it looked like I'd have to move fuel lines/coils etc and it seemed like a much bigger job than it should be :P
Yeah you have to undo everything.
TP = Torque power.
vn-vt dual plane
ah okay cool.
decent money to be able to make easy access of the dizzy :P
haha
well the rotor came off and new one went on easy enough.
Just finished numbering the new dizzy cap to match existing. now to find out which new leads go on which bit.
Hope the cap goes on easy LOL, then it' just fitting the new plugs. Hopefully the standard gaps will be more than fine. I don't have any feeler gauges yet to see.
Well if you got the right plugs it should be fine.
That manifold flows heaps better then the banana's. It's what you want if you want to make some more ponies.
Yeah got the right plugs for my car, the guy at auto one looked em up for me to check that they're for 5L VT's.
Might look into it down the track a bit once I've fixed up a few other things with the car
New dizzy cap and leads on... finally. fkn too hot out there. had to wipe myself down with a towel every couple of minutes from sweating.
Now to pull out old plugs, but first... cool down inside in aircon with an ice cold beverage!
Job Done.
Think one of the leads I put in the wrong spot, seems a little short and tight to put on, but its there and the car starts !
Thats always a good sign.
No strange knocking sound like there was last night either which I thought was odd.
The old plugs were pretty average, as was the cap and rotor.
Will take it for a spin after I have some lunch, to go and get my battery tested.
May have to fit a new starter if it's not a battery issue.... :/
Only tip is to find someone with small hands!! Worst placed distributor ever!
EDIT: Just read you have done the job! Well done, hope you still have your knuckles left!
Good effort mate.
I presume its the first time you've done this?
Always good to DIY stuff. You'll find next time its easier again.
One thing with the 5ltr, the dizzy is a bastard but the starter is a piece of piss!
Yeah soop first time messing with that stuff.
I've played with other things on the engine but never messed with dizzy etc.
Good feeling to know I managed it.
Kinda sucks that one of the leads are a bit tight, but it still fits so I couldn't be bothered removing the dizzy to rearrange again, way too hot.
Just had battery tested and apparently my battery is 'really good'. So looks like I'm gonna be up for a starter.
Is there a better aftermarket starter or is the factory holden starter what needs to be used ?
might order it soon
Edit: I've noticed a bit more responsiveness. But I still think more needs to be squeezed out :P
hahaha
You can get hi-torque starter motors but I wouldn't bother. They're only really used in high compression engines as they're a bit harder to spin over.
If you can, just go a brand new stocker.
Just did an ebay search prior to calling holden.
Last time I called them they wanted $300.
Found a Hi Torque one thats for about $200 and comes with free multimeter haha
then theres another for sale for about 265 thats new HOLDEN COMMODORE STARTER MOTOR VN VP VR VS VT V8 BOSCH (eBay item 170605150594 end time 25-Feb-11 20:59:58 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats
What do people usually suggest for Starters ?
Would the bosch one be alright, or should I just go Genuine starter from Holden direct ??
That one you linked too will be fine. Just make sure it suits your transmission. I've never seen the difference but im told there is one for the Auto and manual.
Decided to just go through Holden as it's walking distance from my house. They wanted $330, but figured I'll have it by Monday buying through them whereas I'm likely to wait near 2 weeks via ebay.
Now I'll just have to pinch a jack and car stands from a mate or my bro so I can do the job!
Hopefully it's nice and easy and I have no more issue afterwards!
Fair enough, hope its not just some stuffed wiring causing your issue. That'd be annoying.
