Disconnect the battery before attempting to remove the wires off the back of it.

Unless a bearing has gone most of the time just the voltage regulator needs changing.

Yeah I know about disconnecting the battery and all. But is it just the one bolt I have to loosen to loosen the belt ? Or do I have to undo more of the pulleys?

There are three bolts holding the altenator on. You don't have to loosen any bolts to remove the drive belt, only fit a socket or ringy onto the bolt head holding the tensioner pully (just below altenator) and pull it towards the drivers side of car against the spring tension. This will make the belt go slack enough to slip it off.
