it depends on the state, i know here in sa the motor must be newer than the car itself, i can't comment on the gearbox tho

VS doesnt have a ERG system where the VT does, not a bigger tho alot of people discard it any way. I dont know where "moe" is or what state ur in, but i would be ringing your local transport department to make sure you can put an old motor into a newer car (vs motor to vt body) as "ashbox" stated above.
You can just swap it and think nothing of it as they do look the same but if any one checked the motor number, they would find out that way

Hi well it does depend on what state your in as i just fitted a motor out of 95 vs to a 97 vt wagon they fit straight in i just used all the gear of the vt motor on the
vs motor now the vs was auto & the vt was manual i used the manual again but it all bolted in no worries

As far as I'm aware you can't put an older motor into a newer car but I think that the same type of motor is fine. A VS Ecotec in a VT should be OK but a 3800 from a VR wouldn't be OK. Same as putting an Ecotec in a VZ.

As suggested, first determine the legalities re a vs engine number going into a vt body. Assuming thats all well and good you'll have to swap a few parts between the two motors. To use the vs motor in a vt you'd have to swap over the vt inlet manifold and plenum and the exhaust manifolds. This is due to the vt running an EGR setup and also the drivers side exhaust manifold is a different shape. Use the original vt auto box and 1800 torque converter.
    Hope that helps.
