Hi, Just want to share my story on the common problem of 'what I thought' was brake squeel.
I bought the second hand Berlina privately and for a few months not a problem with noisy brakes. Then it started.... ^%*&ing squeeling everytime you pressed the brake peddle after the brakes warmed up.
Determining which wheel is squeeling is a challenge. I replaced the front brake pads, cleaned up the disks, brake dust etc...worked for a while (30 minutes of driving...then started squeeling again) OK, must be the rear. Bought pads and replaced. Same thing happened...30 minutes of driving...then started squeeling again.
Believe it or not, If i pressed on the brake pedal from a different side, like on the left (instead of the usual right/centre) the squeel would not occur! This got me thinking about forces on the disk and wheel bearing. I managed to determine that it was the front drivers side wheel that was squeeking and I pulled up next to another car and heard the reverb of thier car.
OK. Maybe it's not the brake pads - maybe the front wheel bearing. I tooke the wheel off yet again, removed the caliper, bashed off the rotor and withdrew the bearing once I undid the 3 hex heads. I cleaned up the bearing housing (with ABS sensor), and was hoping to repack, but after reading other posts in this forum, you cannot do it.
After cleaning up the bearing, I noticed some blue temper tarnishing (got too hot) close to the wheel spindle. The bearing it's self didnt have any slop, but appeard to be rough inside. I am now sourcing a new bearing and will let you know if it fixes the problem. I'm hoping. Cheers.
