G'day
I am sick of my auto slush box and either want to make it shift quickly, firmly, and with power OR i want a manual.
If i was to do up the auto what would i do? or if i was to do a convertion, would it be worth it, would i have to use the Getrag box or is there something better out there that would be good?
Any info on transmissions and this topic would be good.
Thanx
Rob
Tell the auto to straighten up and drive right or it will get the sack

Try putting some sawdust in with the tranny fluid, I saw it on On The Buses once...or was that the engine oil?

i would be very interested to know the answer to this. Espically if a 6 speed could be put on the V6
Is that what u have?
Yeah I am also interested in this..
Robbie
Hey guys,
Its a V6
Why not shift kit it?? That will certainly firm up your gear changes and take the slush out. Changing to a manual can be a very long and daunting process if you want to do it yourself, if not be prepared to have some big bucks for someone else to do it
id be happy to forkout if it was 6 speed...
THe 6speed wont fit into the VT, and i rekon that the shift kit idea would be the easiest and best.
Thats all right, thats ok, I drive a commodore anyway!!!!
I looked at putting a shift kit into it, AP Automatics at blacktown here in Sydney which i have gone to in the past and i think know there stuff told me he wouldn't even think about shift kitting a holden trans without doing a full reco on it first and said if i was prepared to do that then i would be extremely happy otherwise it will shit itself in 6 months.
And yeah, if i was to put a manual into it i wouldn't do it myself.

BTW: When you here someone say they have got a 3000rpm Stally in there car what exactly does that meen.....it revs to 3000rpm and then BAM!!! u scream off with smoke trailing every time you goto move or what?

I agree with what your Auto Transmission bloke said, shift-kitting and stall convertors put extra pressure and create extra friction in the box resulting in more heat. It wouldn't be the most reliable alternative without a rebuild and large tranny cooler.
On the topic of stall convertors my idea of them is this....
A stall convertor is similar to a factory convertor but smaller in diameter, the vanes inside the convertor are at different angles (why some people just get the vanes bent for a small improvement in stall) When someone says they have a 3000rpm convertor it means that the convertor will not fully lock up and allow slippage up to and until a certain point. Allowing you to mash the pedal with revs climbing quicker, getting your car into the right rev range (usually pending cam used) and improves launch. For example with a 3000rpm convertor you can stall it with the brakes up to say 2200-2500rpm without it pulling on them, then when you jump off the brakes it should flash up to the 3000rpm, providing a decent launch with traction or ALOT of wheelspin
Convertors particully large biatches make a sh!tload of heat, so a big cooler and strengthened tranny is a must in most cases.
Hope that helps a litte

So how about the stock transcooler on a VS exec? Big enough to cut my tranny into a 3000 stall box, or should I get a transintercoolerfreezerradiator for it?

If that was a serious transmission cooler question.
No, the stocko trans cooler is tiny But a larger Davies Craig one will do just fine

QUOTE THe 6speed wont fit into the VT
I though the 6 Speed came out with the launch of the LS1.
What about a differet transmission, probably to much work involved
yer im shore it wont fit might depend on what year too
Plus waaaaay to expenseive
probly easier to buy a hole new car with manual lol
Thats all right, thats ok, I drive a commodore anyway!!!!
I'm sure it could be fitted, but the fitting and purchase cost would be close to $7000-$8000...could be wrong but that wouldn't be far off.
When I was pricing gearboxes before I decided to rebuild my T5, I called a wrecker in Brisbane who had no T5's but offered me a full Getrag conversion for 2k. I'd say about 3k all up for a complete professional conversion, maybe a little less.
Cheers

cant someone explain the concept of a shift kit to me
Yeah it was a serious question. Not that Im thinking of rushing out and spending money now...But how much would that mofo thing youre talking about and the bending of the vanes and the strengthening etc cost?
More money than Ive got? Thought so...
