HI,
I just did the suspension on my car on the weekend, and was replacing the rotors and pads at the same time with some slotted rotors and bendix ultimates.
Fronts were no problem, slipped stright off, but the rears I couldnt get the rotor to clear the handbrake drum. I looked carefully, and the shoe didnt clear the drum. I looked at the old ones, and there was a worn ring around the inside, and sure enough, the old ones slipped right back in.
Is there a procedure I should be following to relaes the handbrake? It looks like I will only need about 1.5 - 2mm clearance!
Open to any and all ideas!
On another note, You know your getting old when you have to replace your spring / shocks, and it's the same price for STD / Lowered / Raised, and you choose the raised! LOL Fist and a finger gap between top of tyre and guard now!
Is the hand brake all the way off, if yes, you may be able to adjust some slack into it. Follow the cable towrds the front and you'll see 2 nuts and a long bolt-ish bracket. Loosen it and see if the drums drop in more.
Don't forget to re-tighten it! lol
There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
The adjuster is under the centre of the car, about level with the cat. But that is just the adjuster for the cable. The actual handbrake shoes adjuster is in between the brake shoes.
To adjust them properly, back the cable adjuster off until the cable is slack, then if the rotor still won't go over the shoes, back off the little wheel with teeth on it that is between the brake shoes until the rotor fits. Then adjust the cable until you have 4-5 clicks on the lever. If the rotor goes over the shoes after backing the cable off, put it on and adjust the cable until you have 4-5 clicks.
VT-VX dont have the bracket halfway up like VS and previous do they? They just have the adjuster on the handle inside the cabin (long 10mm)
Wind that all the way out.
Then, if that's already been done and it still doesnt want to come off, then take the rear wheels off and take the rubber bungs ot of the rotors. Rotate the rotors around until the hole created is near the bottom. Use a torch to find the adjuster starwheel and then put a screwdriver through the hole and back it off.
I cant exactly remembe which direction is which off the top of the head, but they're opposite. So, LHS will be (possibly) down to loosen, and RHS will be (possibly) up to loosen.
Once you've got the old rotor off, you can either adjust the handbrake shoes to spec using vernier calipers, to get it to 128.6mm at the widest part of the disc shoe, or you can put the rotor back on and adjust the starwheel in the opposite direction to which you took it off until the shoes touch the rotor, and then back the adjuster off two spins until the rotor starts to move again.
Then go back inside the car and adjust up the nut on the handle.
