it could just be the regulator in the alt remove the altanator then remove the screws thathold the reg on if the carbon brushes are worn down get a reg and try that first they are a third of the price of a alt

Or if you are a bit handy with the soldering iron, simply get 2 new brushes to suit and replace the worn ones. Repco or any auto electrician should have them for a few bucks.

No need to remove the alternator to access the regulator is there ?

On the 5ltr it's a pain in the arse, but doable - I can imagine with the position of the alternator on an ecotec it would prbably be just as easy to do it insitu.

If its a V6 though its as easy as piss to get to. I can have my alternator off in a couple of minutes.

If it is an Ecotec, just remove the support bar that goes from the top of the alternator to the head, remove the bottom-left bolt, and just swing the alternator up.
