good thing about the gen3's, you can buy re-ring kits and pistons for $750 genuine
could also be a good starting point for more powaaaaaah work too!

Worn rings, blown head gasket, worn valve seats (?), are good starters.

To put new rings in the motor has to come out, and disassembled.

This could be one of them LS's that was a GM half dud ?. But ant at that price drive it around, buy another LS motor, work it in your garage and run the other one dead until your ready to place the muscle under the bonnet. Cause @ that price I'd jump it. as long as everything else is pretty good.

hmmm so 2 fix all these suggestions wat costs would b involved in just parts alone? i doubt id b able 2 do this myself so prolly get a mechanic 2 do, but might b able 2 save a little on labour as misus dads a mechanic.

LMAO sorry mate sorry. i mean the motor lol. GM had some duds around the monaro first batch of Gen3's. the ones found were replaced under warranty. if this is one someone forgot to have it changed. if it's one something is weird..

I'm the same, a car and another motor wont come cheap. Ive been thinking of getting myself another engine to play around with. funds are so so. room is so so small lol.

My uncle always had this great saying. as long as the body is mint, you can always change the motor drive train etc. but he was a mechanic.

True actually theres a nice red VX SS that id prefer 2 buy (only coz its red ) but its almost double the price but has only done 90k kms but he said wat mayb ur talkin bout? his engine was swapped under warrenty after 50k kms coz of the piston slap they had so even tho the cars done 90k the motor had only done 40k. If i had the money id buy this 1 but then saw this other 4 half the price with an extra 60k kms on it so just weighing up my options.

assuming if this was the case it couldnt b replaced now surly lol?

That one sounds interesting. and that price isn't all that bad with the motor.

the other blokes engine couldn't have been replaced by holden. but then again if it has been, you can wonder what's going on here ?.

Are you interested in a VT s2 hsv clubsport r8 ? for $11.900 ?. 140,000 on the clock, umm but it's in victoria and blue .

Not really man even tho it sounds good but im not really needing a new car the VT does fine. But i figured if i find an SS cheap enough i can put all that SS gear on my current VT so i have a better chance of selling it, that way i can wack on my current kit and have the same style car just with a better motor then again i suppose i could ruin the HSV and put it on the VT hahaha i can see the V8 hot heads pots already starting 2 stir up

reason? 2 costly in the end? i suppose i could find a stocker but so far even the stockers r around the 8-9k mark here, then id have 2 go through spending more on exhaust, lowering ect... which has been done on this VX SS just hasnt been lowered enough but can use my own gear from the VT then.

Edit: is there a way i could mayb barter him down further on the motor report alone?

LOL, HSV By WRX! lol. You might be best looking for crashed SS's ?. something you can pull the interior out of, and take anything worthwhile you need, then sell what ever you don't want make some cash back ?.

What about repo etc ?. I've spotted one already same place as i got mine from. $11,500. 02 VY SS. No damage i can see. i can PM you the website and you can look over it from time to time, one day something might pop up when the times right ?... I spot that many great cars at this place. the last one i was drolling over was a 05 SV6. $8,800. 80,000 on the clock. almost the perfect car for me with the VT. SV8 would be perfect.

The interior i wont need just the exterior i want, front bumper, headlights, rear bumper and side skirts pretty much. i dont like the VX tear drop lights so id definatly use my monaro headlights on the VX then it'll fit my front bar and i dont want those horrid reflectors in my rear bar either

but yeah thats y i thought this 1 if cheap enough could b worth gettin as its all intact so i can then sell my VT if need b after.

yeah send the link man always good browes wen theres nothing else 2 do.

You are taking a real risk and it's very easy to chew thru $2k getting it back to square 1. On the other hand you can buy a car that is known to be ok with minimal risk. If I was in the market for that sort of car I'd be looking at stock standard owned by an oldie and then modify from there even to the point of going without till I could afford the right car to begin with.

Edit: is there a way i could mayb barter him down further on the motor report alone?
Always a chance - don't be shy to start bidding very low. It's damn hard to sell a car with such a serious problem. I'd be starting at nothing more than $2k and negotiate from there. Beyond that it's not worth your while.

As I understand your op, you wanted to know what it would cost for new pistons and rings plus gaskets, doing the job yourself with some help from another person, a mechanic. with no labour costs, $1000 to $1200 as soon as you add labor costs, double ie $2000 +. Machining ie hone or rebore cylinders, you must do one (hone) or both, rebore and hone....$300ish. High performance pistons and gaskets, upwards of $1500 plus labour. And then it starts to get expensive.

Cheers Graham thats wat i was after coz now i can try use this as a barter as i dont know much at all about these motors so if i try sound like i know wat im talking about it may convince him the cars just not worth wat hes trying 2 sell it 4. if i had the know how and confidence 2 pull a motor out mayb id give it a go myself but im not quite there with motors yet.
