can anyone please help me suss out what this ticking noise is in my gen3, i have only noticed it for a few hundred k's now, did an oil and filter change today but noise seems to still be there as you can hear in the video. first bit of vid is in engine bay and second bit is underneath by the oil filter, sorry for the bad quality it was at night..YouTube - P1000786.MOV
as you can also hear the noise isnt a constant tick, it stops for a couple of mili seconds and will then tick eratically
mine has the same sound mate, still havent found the freakin problem, ive just put it down to standed headders maybe

I was thinking lifters maybe? There is alot of vids on YouTube of ls1's with similar sounds. I am putting a cam in soon so I reckon lifters on my list aswell, what's involved in replacing lifters? Is it just a matter of taking the head off?
Love to know wat it is cos i had a look at a vx ss yesterday and i didnt buy it cos it had that sound and i remember my vl had it and apprently it was the tappits they fixed the problem but then it came back a few weeks later and i was over it! it drove me mad. i said to myself im never goin to buy a car that has a ticking problem haha, If you get it sorted plz lets us know
Most Ls1 motors are a bit on the noisy side when cold, my VX SS has a little bit of noise when cold, but once up to temp it is very quiet, no noises at all, I think as long as they are quiet at operating temp I wouldn't worry too much. That ticking sound could be valve train noise, from what I have read LS1's do get a bit of noise in that area, another thing to consider is that fuel injectors do have a ticking sound when operating, so maybe it is a combination of lifters and injectors.
does it do it only when its cold, and once heated up goes away? might be something similar to my calais, i had that noise for a year, no one could tell me what it was, then a mechanic said i had a cracked exhaust manifold, got a new one and has never ticked since, the reason it went away when hot was it was only a hairline crack, and it closed up when hot
I changed the oil last night, the gm oil looked terrible! It was a brown colour. Warmed car up to normal temp and still ticking, last two tanks of juice have been 91 Ron, that wouldn't be the cause would it?? I must of had one of the quiet ls motors coz it's always been silent up until now, btw it's done 200,000 km's
Did you watch the vid, it's more of a faint knock rather than a tick I suppose. Thanks for your help so far gius
I'll take another video tonight in daylight, it sounds internalhope it's not a bearing or something
you would know if it was a bearing mate, it would sound like 2 spanners in the sump are having an epic fight to the death

My VXII SS has the exact same sound coming from the engine bay.
The car has had two different LS1's in it now and both have made the tapping/knocking/lifter sound. The old engine hit 300,000kms and made the sound, while the new engine has 35,000kms on the clock and still makes almost a 100% identical sound.
I've spoken to alot of mechanics about the matter and they have all said that the "LS1's are a noiser engine and you have nothing to worry". When i had the engine installed and it had the noise i took the car back and was all like WTF up in the engineer's face. He explained that they are just a noiser engine and if i dont belive him go and ask others.... so i did, and each mechanic/engineer has all said the same thing.
This might no answer your question or provide you with the answer you are looking for, but this is just what my experience has been and i hope it helps you sleep better at night!
Cheers
My 304 made the same noise.. A cam lobe was farked somehow and it ate away at the base of one of my lifters....
My VT SS GenIII had a loud tick as well which got worse over a two month period until a couple of days ago when it turned into a horrible rattle, which when I looked for, turned out to be the water pump shitting itself, the shaft and pulley was wobbling about. Hopefully when I get around to changing the pump later this week the tick will be gone too. Might be worth a look at yours?
Yeah my 2002 vx ss has the same noise. Most of em do it especially at cold start but goes on warm up. Nothin to worry about.
im still unsure as to what it could be, i have ordered a cam package from comp cams which comes with new lifters so if its the lifters ill find out soon enough. just waiting on the di&*heads to post it, giving me every excuse under the sun!!
my vx ss s2 has the same noise took it to Holden got told all ls1 make this noise
it must just be me then, im used to my enginge being REALLY quiet up until now. i love it how all the mechanics tell you its normal but none actually say what the noise is.
could be your valve spring, my ecotec had the same noise and drove on it then a rod went through the sump due to thrashing though. not sure about the LS1's
Im gonna try magnatec 10w40 or castrol edge as heard these help to make ls1's more quiet.
hey guys, just pulled out stock cam and put new one in. i have another thread with a pic, have a look at one of the lobes! i guess i have found the noise
