Have you checked the fuse related to the power steering? It's the one marked "cruise control, power steering, mirrors". Try the mirrors, if they work the fuse is fine.

You could be up for a steering switch, this is on the rack and allows extra power steering fluid to go through at low speeds which makes the steering easier.

There's a quick way to tell if the power steering is on the way out, does the power steering come back when you accelerate? Or is there a whine when accelerating and moving the wheel? Whack it in N and rev to 3000ish- hold it there- and turn the wheel a couple of times. If it's much easier and/or whining noise- it's likely it's the power steering pump in need of replacement.
Could also be the fuse as accentstencil says, so check the fuse first.

Make sure your drive belt has been installed correctly and is not slipping.

my vt calais had a issue with its power steering, felt like armstrong steering for awhile, ended up being a faulty solenoid on the rack, was cheap and easy to fix, they have speed sensitive steering which sometimes stuffs up which is what my problem was

If it is none of the above, check your tyre pressures
