Daughter has a 1998 vt manual v6 and the clutch is slipping .Have looked underneath and theres heaps of oil around the bellhousing , steering rack , would this be the cause from a rear main seal ? Have read about issues with dual mass fly wheels and $$$$ involved -any advice to diagnose or best way to fix would be appreciated .It looking like a costly fix otherwise. -cheers!
more then likely rear main seal yes
as for the clutch you have 2 options that i know of that are kinda expensive :P
option 1- get a new clutch kit and check the condition of the DMF.. if its in good condition you can find someone to machine it, hardly anyone does. i know someone in sydney?! i paid like 700 for a clutch kit, dmf machined and everything fitted. but if new DMF needed, it will cost a shitload and thats where option 2 will come in
option 2- convert to a single mass/solid flywheel or even get a HD kit roughly $1000-1400 includes everything you need
hope this helps
Yep sounds like a rear main seal, May aswell put a new clucth in while you are at it as the gear box has to come out.
Take it easy...But do take it...
Do not argue with an IDIOT.
He will just drag you down to his level an beat you with experience.
Some people take me the wrong way, Like smacking up Marijunna.
If you do go down the solid flywheel conversion road you have to realise that there will be a little bit of chatter under load at low revs.
I went with the solid flywheel and HD clutch, I think it's fantastic, a lot more grab and the friction range is way smaller which I like![]()

+1 on the solid flywheel route. Best thing I ever did.
Also I know on my VX it is possible to adjust the height of the pedal on the master cylinder push rod. Maybe try giving this a bit of adjustment.
I have had the problem before where the clutch started to slip as the pedal adjusted itself as the lock nut came loose.
Take the plastic panel off from the bottom of the dash and you should be able to see the shaft that goes from the pedal to the master cylinder push rod.

thanks for all the replies - keza87- gets the prize -a 3/4 turn of the bolt one way made it worse and going back and 3/4 turn anti clock wise has made a huge improvement.Daughter was happy , will keep an eye on it-thank god it worked as the scenario of dual mass flywheels /clutches is scary when you have just lost your job.Puts pressure on old dad to help out again -enough holes in my pocket as it is -but thanks again for advice it has put my daughters mind at ease and my wallet has come off stress leave.........................
question.. if your clutch pedal needs adjusting like his daughters did.. does the pedal still sit flush with the brake pedal??
