    Default Air-con/Ventilation woes

    Hi,

The saga of recomissioning an uber-low mileage VX I Equipe continues....

Latest issue is that after driving for say half an hour or so the air-output from behind the face-level ventilation outlets drops to zero, with the blower unit still happily blowing away (from sounds of it). By twiddling about with the knobs I can sometimes get it right again, but usually not. Car is going to dealer to get repaired under used car warranty. The service manager I spoke to thought it is a vacumn issue. Could he be right? Possibly related is that the car was a bit hard to start this morning.

It usually is a vacuum problem.

It's always the way, when you want it to do it, it doesn't.

Could also be icing the evaporator up if the air flow is stopping and the fan is still going. To test you'd need to turn it of for 15 minutes or so to let it thaw out, before turning it back on.

If it were a vacuum problem I'd expect the air to be coming out other vents, feet or demist maybe. This is just a guess I don't remember having no air from any vent the last time I had to work on a car with no air with the blower working.
    I aim to misbehave.

It appears to be the evaporator icing over - driving to uni today (45 min trip) air-con was going, airflow stopped, turned off air-con, thawed it out, airflow kicked up again. Seeing that it is coming into winter i am happy to leave air-con switched off for now, but warranty runs out this week, and I am busy all week.

What could be faulty in system? So far have had an o-ring and some other valve replaced, in addition to the air-con being regassed. All under used car warranty.....

My quote was $200 less - that's replacing the core. what i ended up doing was cheaper. refill the gas in summer ($35 per hit) until it stops cooling. and hope it gets me through the summer time. my mechanic recommended that to me. and he would have done the core replacement for me. but said save your cash this way is cheaper.

Probably find the thermostat is knackered. Off the top of my head I can't remember what that model uses. But it's most likely electronic. Which should be a simple case of unplug the old and connect the new.

[The thermostat turns the A/C on&off depending on where the thermostat is set temperature wise. It senses the coil temperature and usually at max cold works in a 3-8degC range, so as to not freeze your evaporator up on humid days.]

Update - dealer diagnosed issue as a bad TX valve. New one or order, will see what happens...

FURTHER UPDATE..................New TX valve worked, albeit breifly. Car went back. Played about with system pressures, no good, still icing up. Last week the compressor and its respective pressure sensor/valve/thingy was replaced. Appears to be woking fine.....just as well, car now out of used car warranty.
